oil pressure light stays on

72 Barracuda auto 340. Engine was rebuilt less than 500 miles ago. The sending unit is as new. The oil light stays on. I checked my connection and it is tight. The wiring harness is new from Bill Evans and I don't think it is grounding out.  Checked the level and it looks about a half quart high. Is slightly too much oil enough to trigger that. Should I drain a little out?

Can you put as mechanical gauge on it to see what the oil pressure really is?

It might be a problem with the mechanical pump or oil pickup tube. 500 miles is enough for anything to work lose or break if it's going to fail.
For sure do as Brad suggests.

If your really have really low oil pressure your lifters should be very  noisy.

Definitely get a gauge on there and verify what the true pressure is!    :grinyes:

 :iagree:  Like everyone said, get another gauge on there to verify the pressure.

Why is the level high?  Does it smell like fuel or antifreeze?  Does it feel thinned down between your fingers?

Reason why I ask is that once my oil pressure dropped so I check the level and it was almost a quart over and smelled like gas.  Turns out my carb was dumping gas into the intake and thinning out the oil, thus the drop in oil pressure and higher oil level.  :2cents:

Did you buy the correct new sending unit?.. The one for the rallye gauges would provide a continuous ground while the one for the light would be open under pressure
