Garage
« on: July 02, 2013 - 09:30:36 AM »
I have a bit of a problem, a catch 22 kind of problem. I want to build a garage and add a second floor to part of my home. I am in the process of getting a loan and had to get home owners insurance. They don't like my 70 Dodge truck and one of my 71 Challengers that are not tagged in the yard. They say they are a hazard. :eek4: So that is my problem. What do I do with a 70 pickup and a 71 Challenger that I have no garage to put them in? Without the insurance I can't get the loan. With out the loan I can't build the garage. Without the garage I can't put the vehicles in it and get the insurance company off my back. :bricks1:

I may be able to get them stored someplace at a cost. Or get one of those portable type garage things and put them in (at a cost). What would you do?

I would rent the closest storage unit that would house both of them for one month.
Have the insurance over to look and bring them back.
Cancel the storage unit.

Don't loose that storage unit with the cars in it though.  I'd be bidding!

Usually the insurance company will not come back after one visit.
The bank will send someone to evaluate how much of the work has been done for the payments you set up for the loan.
They don't care about the cars. .

you could do that but if something happens, like a fire, and the cars are there, you`ve got a problem.  :2cents:

I thought about a storage unit for a month or two. The problem is neither of these vehicles run. I would have to have them towed back and forth. I have a buddy that could keep them at his shop (for a price), but then I have to get them towed to and from his shop. I'm thinking the portable garage could be sold after I'm done with it.

The loan is not a home improvement loan, it is a simple mortgage on my home. So I don't have to worry about the bank coming out again. They got the appraisal already.

Any one ever use one of those portable garages? I need one that will hold two vehicles.

They don't like the fact you have extra vehicles on the property? Or do they object that they're not tagged?  If it's a simple issue of having "registered" vehicles on the property see if you can register them inexpensively as classic, antique, special interest or whatever your state has available for collector cars.  If insurance is mandatory you can probably get cheap insurance and register them for a month just for the sake of having a plate on them and making them legal.  Depending on your state it might be cheaper to simply store them somewhere, but a guy I talked to once had to register a parts car as an antique just to get the city off his back.

Portable garages may satisfy the insurance company, or they may not since they are "temporary structures"  High winds and tree branches ruin them easily.  Maybe ask around if someone has a car trailer or tow dolly to borrow to save the tow fee.  As a last ditch, talk to the tow guys directly.  Some of them are car guys and LOVE old cars.  They may give you a cash deal break just so they can say they had a Challenger on their truck.
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

They had no problem with my purple car or the trailer, just the other ones without tags. I think it would cost more to register/tag/insure them then storage for a few months. I'm going to check with the insurance company to see if a portable garage will satisfy them. If it will I will be shopping for either a two car or two singles and put them in for now. I can sell the garage(s) after I am done or just keep it (them) for parties or something. I would rather have one single unit if possable.

If you want to move them to your buddys place I have a car dolly you can use, if you have something to tow with

Thanks Doug, but he has a roll back. He needs a new tire for it though.

I ordered a 18x20 portable garage from Tractor Supply and it came yesterday. :grinyes: I still have a little bit of work to do around the house before I call the insurance guy back out. I have power washed the moss off the roof and fixed some windows. I got to fix 2 more basement windows (cracked glass) and clean up a bit more.

Friday the loan company is coming out so I can sign my life away.  :money:

The best news is I got the 70 Dodge pickup started yesterday.  :woohoo: At least I know that will move on it's own.

Hope you problem gets sorted out !

I sort of had an issue like that. Someone reported my car to the code officer say that there was an unregistered car/car in car in disrepair. It was covered so how would they know? I suspect it to be a real estate person selling the condo across the street.  Code guy said either sell it, garage it or register it. My garage is so full I can't put it there yet. A portable garage to the code guy said it requires a permit. He said even a little garden shed requires a permit. Make sure everything is ok with your insurance company to satisfy their rules.

I checked with the county code and a portable garage does not need a permit here. Out of sight is ok with the insurance as they don't care what is inside, just what is in the yard so that works for them.
