Need to create a fender tag
« on: March 27, 2005 - 11:59:47 PM »
I have a 70 Challenger R/T 383 4 speed. I purchased the car from the second owner who bought the car when it was two years old. It sat outside for a long time, and needs a lot of work. It also needs a fender tag. Unfortunately I don't have a build sheet, but I would like to recreate a fender tag that represents exactly the way the car came from the factory. Fortunately for me, the second owner, a lady, didn't do any mods to the car except replacing the engine her boyfriend blew up. I have studied and recorded a lot of fender tag info on 70 Challenger R/Ts built in LA (E code). I am certainly no expert, but I want to do this right. It does not have the numbers-matching engine, and I am not going to do a restoration on it, but would like the car to be complete, hence my quest for a tag. This is not a heavily-optioned car, and I think I have everything figured out on the tag except for two items on the next-to-the bottom line- the production date and order number. Does anyone have any idea where/how to come up with that info or how it is estimated? On the door sticker, my car has a 10-1969 production date. I know there is somewhat of a difference in the option sequence depending on where the car is manufactured. I also know there is not necessarily a fixed sequence in which some of the options are listed on the tag. From what I have discerned about tags, it doesn't seem they were always made with extreme care as to thoroughness of data. Sometimes a "minor" option will be listed on a tag, on other cars it won't. A well-known mopar guru wants about $1500 to look at the car with no guarantees he will produce the tag. If he can't, he will refund only the cost of the tag ($200). Not worth it to me. I suspect the guru would extrapolate the production date and order # based on data he has on file. In other words, a guess. I can do that, perhaps not quite as accurately, but don't feel like paying $1500 just to get the numbers a bit closer. Any ideas, resources or info would be appreciated.

Would this guru you happening to be talking about be named Galen Govier?  I thought he'd reproduce them for cheaper upon verification of the correct codes. :dontknow:

If the well know guru is Galen you'd have more luck finding Jimmy Hoffa.

no way to figure out the sequence number.  A.G. Backeast will do it for 40 bucks if you lay the tag out exactly.  He also has kept track of vins vs build date and should be able to nail it to the day.

Couldn't you get the production date and sequence number from the numbers stamped in your cowl and/or radiator support?

That's what I was thinking, too.  There were so many different areas they stamped the car with the last 8 digits of the V.I.N. that you should be able to figure out what number car it was as it rolled down the assembly line.  The problem is, I know the fender tag gives you the exact date the car was produced so you'd be kind of guessing with what number the car was when it rolled down the line.  Did I confuse anyone with all that jumbo?

What about the tag inside the driver's door at the latch area?  Didn't this tag have the date?

So now all he needs is the sequence number.  Assuming he has the door decal still!

I think as long as you can document the car as legit, any of the following companies or people can help. There is no way I can say whether any of these are accurate, but the first two have been recommended by others either on this site, or a couple of other Mopar sites. The last one is an eBay listing that has surfaced not too long ago & listed other tags before. I've been fortunate that my current cars have their tags, but even if they didn't I wouldn't give a rats ass. They're all originally 318 or 383-2V cars I'm doing my own way anyway.

Yes, the car has the vin # on the dash pad, cowl, and core support, and they all match. The sticker on the door by the latch area is still there and calls out the manufacture date as 10-1969, and has the vin #, but still leaves me needing the scheduled production date and vehicle order #. I would think there would be some archives or records somewhere that would correlate vin and vehicle order number. An October '69 production date for the 70 model year would be listed as somewhere between A01 to A31 on the fender tag. I'll try Agbackeast to see what they can come up with.

Realize that the vehicle order number has no relation to the vin.  VIN numbers are in sequence.  Order numbers are based off the order form used when ordering the car.  Most 1970 order numbers will begin with 0 or 1.  For example, here is the vin/order number iinfo on three L.A.-built '70 Challengers (recently on ebay) that had the same build date:

JS23-U0E-142671  504-143957
JS23-UOE-142796  504-102680
JH23-G0E-142844  504-162579

You might want to contact Barry Wasington. He and I both have an exstensive data base of Cudas and Challengers. We both have info from the old SIAC car club which has helped us help other people get prior owner history and also get fender tags made as well. AG Back East only charges $40 per tag no matter whats on it. They may even be able to help you with a tag as he also has an enormous data base.
Dont forget to register your AAR at the AAR Registry only at www.transamcuda.com 1981 AAR's on file. Also info on 70 thru 74 E-Bodies. Ask me about yours!!
