727 shifting question
« on: July 25, 2013 - 06:18:04 AM »
My 727 was shifting on command when I had the shifter in first and shifted into second manually, this is at full throttle...... But now, when I shift from 1st to second manually (full throttle) the transmission will not shift until the motor hits about 6,700 rpm's which is about 700 rpm's more than I want. If I back out of the throttle quickly and hammer it again, it will shift at 6,000 rpm's as desired. Here's my set up;
727 on a 340 motor, Lokar shift linkage adjusted per instructions, stock/factory shifter and linkage.

It '' was '' shifting on command, it started to misbehave on a hot day at the drag strip. Any suggestions at to what could possibly be causing this would be much appreciated.
THANKS!

Not knowing enough about autos it should have something to do with the throttle pressure / kickdown adjustment holding it in 1st gear , I wish Terry spent more time here

hi
i have a  similar problems = 727 with full manual  shift
at low speed/rpm   :  from 1 gear  to 2 gear fast shift and  from 2-3 also fast.
at full throttle( shifting  at 6500 rpm )  1 gear to  2 gear is  fast shift   but  2 gear to 3 gear  the shift it longer  mayby 2 second longer ???   :clueless: :clueless:

If it is not shifting when you move the shifter, then governor pressure is not over coming TV pressure. You either have a drop in governor pressure ( inside leak) or a rise in TV pressure. If it just changed all of a sudden one day, I would guess something happen to the ring area on the governor support ?

Terry,
THANKS for the info, what does it take to check this or fix this? Is this something I can get to by dropping the pan?

Here is an interesting article that you should read:

http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/techarticles/drivetrain/mopp_0208_increasing_shift_speeds_on_the_727_torqueflite/viewall.html

How does the transmission shift at half throttle?

Does the 1-2 shift take place at the same RPM as the 2-3 shift?

If it is acting up out of the blue then the first thing is to check the trans fluid lever on a level surface, with the engine warmed up, and in NEUTRAL (not Park).

If the trans is shifting at too high of an RPM then the kick down linkage (throttle follower linkage) is set too "long".  In your case when the gas pedal is pushed all the way to the floor and the carb is at Wide Open Throttle, the mechanical linkage that connects the stud on the side of the carb to the short lever (the top one) on the transmission is setup too long so that the internal valve that the linkage is connected to is causing the "line pressure" (pressure going to the governor valve) is too high.  Shorten the linkage a coupe of turns (clockwise as viewed from the front) at the carb stud and see if the RPM at up shift for both 1-2 and 2-3 decreases.

The service manual has a procedure that describes the trouble shooting process and there is a fitting at the rear of the transmission you can remove and tap into it with a 300 PSI pressure gage (use high pressure hose) and you can drive around and watch your line pressure in various conditions.

Write down these values and then call AA Transmissions and they can provide you with a new governor valve.

The governor can be replaced by removing drive shaft and the output shaft housing of the trans.
