Help! No start condition
« on: August 02, 2013 - 05:31:44 PM »
I'm having trouble with the challenger.  It has the symptoms of a dead battery. Battery is good, just put new back up starter relay in, still all I get is clicking like its dead.  My next thought is starter what do you guys think.

What does it do when you short the terminals on the relay ?
Is the yellow wire to the relay getting power , is the brown wire at the relay grounding through the Nss switch on the trans in Park ?

Now it's working. We think it might actually be the battery.

either corrosion or a weak cell in the battery

Many auto parts stores will test your battery for free. Worth it to rule in or out the battery as the cause.

A simple test is just turn on the headlights. If they're dim, the battery isn't putting out the juice, or you've got bad/corroded/loose battery cables.

another simple test is to turn on the headlights and they look ok...but go way dim when you turn the key to start...that is normally a bad cell

It breaks down with a serious load

I love easy fixes!

BTW, I've had great success for battery longevity by using one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tender-021-0128-Plus-Charger/dp/B00068XCQU/

if you aren't driving the car every day. It gets me way more than the usual 5 year life. I also use one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/NOCO-ID220S-6V-24V-Battery-Disconnect/dp/B006EH9WUC/

to disconnect the battery when the car will be sitting for a while, and when I connect the charger.

I don't use a battery tender, but I do use a cut off switch as BruteForce posted.

I have Rally gauges with an analog clock that will put a hurtin' on a battery after 3-4 weeks without driving the car.
