'71 barracuda w/ 340
« on: July 21, 2013 - 09:20:02 AM »
I haven't posted on here for about 7 years now.  No excuses, but I've been pretty busy lately.  I think that I may have posted this before, but never really got a good response.  I have a '71 barracuda with 904 auto.  Stock everywhere but I rebuilt and installed a 340 with a edelbrock performer intake and a holley 4160 vacuum secondary/electric choke.  I bought a cheap 14" chrome air cleaner from jegs, but the thing doesn't fit under the hood.  I can't be the first person to ever use this combo.  Does such an air cleaner exist that will fit under the flat hood?

If you like your 14" air cleaner, they make drop bases like this that get you some clearance:

the good part is the RPM intake is a great intake for performance but it is tall , drop base Air cleaner or hood scoop is the only way to go .

340 with Edelbrock RPM intake, 650 AVS and 14 inch 3 inch high Edelbrock dropped base air cleaner, I have 1.375 inch clear with the Rallye hood. I think the flat hood has less height. You might need the newer air cleaner with the two side cone type filters. Check how much clearance you have first and go from there.

Holy cow.  That is a lot of drop.  By any chance, do you know if that clears the throttle and kickdown linkage?  If it does, that would be the way to go.  I'd hate to have to go to the hood scoop, and i don't know if the dual bulge hood really gives that much more clearance.  Plus, I'd have to talk my wife into letting me buy one....  and then get it painted.

I can't speak to that exact one but you may run in to problems.  With the ones I've seen, the throttle cable can usually be fudged with since it's flexible and can work at an angle but kickdown is usually a set metal rod that works in a straight line (unless you have a cable operated kick down).  If it sits too low you may be forced to use a super short filter element, with a filter top to help the breathing.

I have a drop base on the stroker and it is close to the fuel line if it comes straight out of the carb . . . I ended up using some brass fittings and had it come out and then directly down and then hooked from there . . . Certainly possible.
