426 HEMI Cuda giveaway...
« on: August 30, 2013 - 04:50:51 AM »
Mopar Action giveaway car test drive - in this month's issue. 13.73 at 102.6 mph in the quarter. "Not too shabby" they say. Embarrassing, I say. They say, engine not broken in, only 100 miles on it. Thoughts? Were the cars REALLY that slow back then, brand new? Seriously, a HEMI? (tuned to stock specs). I think that my '73 Charger with 400 2 BBL could have beaten that, lol. ?????

I thin you need to add another 2 seconds to that for your Charger.

Was my Charger THAT slow? We used to race every weekend just south of town when I was growing up. My buddy had a '72 Nova 350 with headers, and it could almost beat - did beat anything that came around. Including a Chevy pickup 454 that was heavily modified. Anything, he could smoke it. We didn't have a lot of Mopars around. The owner of the Chevy truck told me that my Charger was the fastest sounding, slowest car he'd ever seen! lol. But he got smoked by the Nova. One thing that's always bothered me. Everyone talks about how their Mopars could smoke the tires. I've never owned a Mopar that could smoke the tires. Even people with 318s in a parents car, I call BS. My 73 Charger with a 400 (289 gears) could not peg leg it. (but it did get up to 120 mph) This new 72 Challenger with a truck 360 Magnum is a complete dog, and cannot smoke the tires. I'm not impressed at all. The only car I have ever owned that could smoke them at will, was the Buick Grand National, and it would even get a second gear scratch. Automatic. No Mopar I have EVER owned would do that. Ever. It's kinda gnawing on me. I hate small blocks, and am building a stroked 400 for it. It's pathetic. I'm embaressed. "Does that thing have a HEMI"? "NO, But you can beat my a$$ anyway, all day long". I realize that the goal is not to just spin the tires. But after the grand national, I am not impressed with the 360 in the Challenger. it is a complete dog. My 88 suburban is probably faster.

My 87 Grand National would have beat it. A brand new econobox piece of junk would beat it now. It's a 426 HEMI! Surly it can't be that slow. Almost 14 seconds? Really? I remember reading a Car and Druiver report about a Hyundya or whatever when they were first imported, and they said if you got over 40 mph the dash would shake and you would go into a death trap white knuckle ride, and the ashtray would rattle out of it's socket. This review reminded me of that. Back in the day they had bias ply tires. They still were insane and pushed them to the limit. And they had faster times. What gives?

Are you talkin about smoking from a launch or powerbrakin. Unless I really rev and then dump My 440 GC just launches and goes. 391's grip good. In my 360 aspen R/T I could auto smoke em and it was all factory my uncle bought it off a Dodge lot in Texas I was the 2nd owner. I could have power-braked that car until the tires popped. It was not a super fast hot-rod by ant means and would take 50 yrs to get to 110mph but I could drive at that speed for hrs. Must of had some hidden gems options installed I wish I still had that car.

You need to remember that the Hemi was a top end car. So it liked to pull like hell on the top end.

Couple this with rear end gears (3.54), and an A833, and skinny rear tires and you have a fast 13.73 car, well sort of.

A large part of getting a really good ET time is the launch, this setup will just smoke the tires. Tub the rear, put big Hoosier slicks, make sure the drivetrain can take the launch, change the rear end gears to something like 4.11 and whammo you will probably be near the 12's.

13.73 is not fast. it's not even quick. My Challenger has 3.55 gears, a 360. I'm appalled that it won't spin the tires. My Buick would spin the tires at a dead stop, and get a second gear chirp, I know that is gearing but that was with a 6 cyl, and turbo lag. It would hit second, and the back end would kick out about a foot or so, catch and take off like a rocket. Whisper quiet. it would plant you back in the seat. I expected much more out of the mighty HEMI. I've never driven a real HEMI, but have had a chevy guy tell me that there was one in a different town, when he was growing up and he admitted that nothing could beat it at all. So how does a goofy 72 Nova with a 350 beat everything that ever came to race (I don't ever remember him losing a race, and I rode shotgun to try and time them most of the time). All he did to it was put a set of Hooker Headers on it. I almost hate to say it, but a 2 BBL. We drove ALL over in that car. All over the state, many road trips, etc, he did nothing, yet he could not be beat. Good gas milage. It's not like I am spoiled on new stuff. My newest ride is an 88 suburban. lol. Almost 14 seconds seems awfully slow to me.  No one had money or know how for tubbing back then, and I can't see doing all that now to a really nice car now. If the goal is to make it seem fast, just run open exhaust on any new car? lol. My memory must be fading. I thought that the muscle was faster. I thought that the HEMI was legendary, not just at top end. Not that it matters, no sense in losing one's drivers liscence just to prove it. But still, almost 14 seconds? REALLY? Is that the truth?

13.5 sounds about right, pretty sure you would see same number from Mag test reports when new.
Memory or legend is always better the reality.

I think they were faster than that, I'm running cast iron heads 906.s mildly ported , cast iron water pump, hp manifolds No headers, forged internals , bigger radiator and I am pretty sure she is faster than 14 sec, I am going to have to run her at the dragstrip to find out for sure.  :burnout:  She seems pretty quick to me. lost a vibration when I swapped the tires.

I guess that is still pretty quick. One gets jaded when the only numbers they post nowadays are new top of the line vett's, mustang gt500's and srt vipers, lol. At least the only places I see posted. I don't bother to look at the lesser cars. I'll never be able to afford one anyway. In my minds eye, we were all faster back then, lol. Man, I really wanted the 426 HEMI to be a few ticks faster than todays stuff, just due to raw power. One thing that they will never be able to improve on is style and class. Maybe that is a generational thing, too, but I doubt it.
