    The 440 eats exhaust manifold gaskets

    I have lost count how many times the cast iron manifolds have started leaking. Tried different brands of gaskets. I think finally I got the passenger side leak free with a racing copper gasket. But the outlet is still a problem.
    I guess retorqing will increase life of the gaskets. What is the proper procedure for getting leak free cast iron exhaust manifolds?
    BTW I run C-body manifolds.

    Have the surface milled flat and reinstall the manifold without a gasket just like
    the factory did.

    :iagree: This is where your problem would be, it would have nothing to do with a brand of gasket if they all do the same thing. A trip to the machine shop is in order. :2thumbs:

    Percy's dead soft aluminum gasket.  Just be aware of how much the exhaust will stick out, since the gaskets are THICK.

    Often the flange on cheap headers are thin and bend/warp easily. I noticed on the more expensive headers the flange is much thicker. And as stated, a milling job seems to be in order!  :2thumbs:

    Milling was my thought too. But manifolds are flat. We coudn't get a feeler gauge under.
    I had no idea the factory didn't use a gasket.
    No gasket on the outlet either?

    Once you have the exhaust off, you can check from one end to the other with a straight edge to check for low spots. The intake does use an intake gasket, but it is part of the valley cover for a big block that is made of a tin material, and i am sure that a gasket is needed for the exhaust, i would not fit one with out one. :thumbsup:

    there is a gasket at the outlet , but nothing at the heads , use the best gasket you can find & Ultra Copper Silicone .
     What is the exhaust system possibly too much back pressure from a restictive system ?
