rear end noise
« on: August 01, 2013 - 08:47:11 PM »
I got the center section back in after a friend rebuilt it for me.  It was making some noise so I wanted it looked at.  He found a race that was chewed up a little so he installed all new races and bearings.  I went for a drive tonight and it's making more noise then ever.  When you are on the gas it's quiet.  As soon as you let off, it starts whining loud.  It gets quieter when you slow down.  As soon as you give it a little gas, it stops.  I assume I need to look for some new gears?

no nessisarily , he obviously missed resetting the pattern correctly , I always measure the backlash Before disassembly so I know where to set it back to , it may be faster to set up new gears though .

I've heard that once there is a noise in the gears, it usually won't go away even if you reset the pattern. True or not?

it can depend , if it was run noisy for a long time usually true only a new set will run quiet , often they can be reset to run very quiet if the pattern is matched closely , obviously when they redid the brgs in yours they not only did not get close to the quiet set up pattern  but went the other way making it much worse .

Looking for opinions on what to do here.  3.23 gears for a 489 case are not available new.(unless something has changed)  It would be a matter of pulling the rear back out, guessing as to which way to go on the adjustment and hoping it gets quieter?

There is a used set of 3.23's for $90 on another site.  The guy says they ran quiet.  Will I run into the same thing when this "new" set of "used" gears is installed?

I just saw a posting on the dark side(aka Moparts) asking what an nos set is worth.  Think it was last night. Sounded cheap.

you should not have to guess on setting up the gears , the pattern should be easy to see on the teeth , & with some marking grease it shoul dnot be hard to match it back up if one takes the time
