Found our project car, 73 Barracuda
« on: July 30, 2013 - 12:56:50 AM »
Well my wife and I found our project car. It is a bit less of a project than I had thought we would get but she is happy, and when she is happy we are all happy. It is a 1973 Barracuda. It was an original 318 car with AC and PS.... and not much else. It was a root beer brown color with white interior and vinyl top. Had shifter on the steering wheel and bucket seats.

The previous owner then put in a 360, move to a console shifter, removed the AC and heat, vinyl top and white interior. It has a built 727 with shift kit (He smoked the original trans somehow) with 3.91 gears instead of 2.76.

It is now what I believe to be lime light green with a black hood, AAR spoiler and AAR stripe down the side.

I like the car as it sits cause we can drive it and work on it. I think first the AAR stripe will come off. As for down the road plans; redo the body work and interior; fix the rust in the trunk; put a vinyl top back on; put AC and heat back in.

I hope to work slowly and keep it fun as funds allow.

Here are a few pics cause........ :useless:

I can't get the interior pic to load. It looks pretty good though. Like most of the car, it is good from far but far from good.
Nice thing is I got lots of extra parts. In this lot I got the numbers matching 318 and original wheels.

I have a couple of quick questions.
1. What is the red light in the dash for? ( not oil or brake, but the one inbetween the fuel and temp gauge)
2. Will the mounting brackets for AC on a 318 work on the 360?
3. Will a 340 6pack set up fit on a 360?

Thanks all

Dragon

P.S. CudaHunter, if the invitation to come over is still open I will get it registared and drive down one weekend  :grinyes:

That is a good lookin car!
Really cool that you got the numbers matching engine with the car.
Did the nom tranny come with it also?
Really looks like it doesn't need much.

The root beer brown color is one I really like.
Didn't really like the color in pictures, but then I saw a 71 with the paint.  Stunning really.

Sure, the invitation is open.  I love talking cars.
Just let me know a few weeks in advance and we'll make a day of it.

Thanks all.

CudaHunter:  I did not get the numbers matching Trans.  I asked and he said he tossed it when it broke   :crying:

Bullitt:  I call it a "project cause there is some hidden body work. It looks nice in the pictures but I want it nice up close too. Both quarters have been fixed but need redone to be correct and the interior is nice for now but we would like it nicer.  The engine is good and strong so will leave that for awhile but I might have a line on a 6 pack set up so may go that route or put the original back in.  Who knows, just picked it up, only time will tell.

well since you all let the cat out of the bag early, yes it is up on craigslist.
No, I like the car very much. I ended up buying a 74 over the weekend that my Wife is in love with.
When I am not at work I will put the whole story up for you all to judge and laugh at  :)

Long story short, it's hard living with women cause they change their minds constantly.

So here is the whole story.

We have been looking for a barracuda/cuda for awhile now. A guy at my work typed in "baracuda" and found a very nice '74 on craigslist only an hour from my house. I sent my wife the link. She called the owner and set up a meeting the next day to view the car. Later that night the craigslist add was removed. With a little investigation we found the car listed on Ebay is a close location to where the craigslist add said it was. The same picutres were posted with the same short description. My wife called the gentleman the next morning to figure out what was going on. She found out that he had his cousin post it on Ebay a few days earlier and not understanding how Ebay works figured we found it there got his phone number and called him. He deleted the craigslist post to ease confustion. Because the car was already bid above our top price we asked the man if we came up with a cash offer if he would end the auction. He said no. We decided that we did not want to get into a bidding war for the car. I told my wife it all seemed fishy cause the car was bid above others that were nut and bolt restored. I said lets wait it out and see what happens.
Meanwhile later the next weekend while stopping for a bit to eat at a local Sonic we found a small car show across the lost at a Village Inn. Then I see a '71 Hemi Cuda Vert pull in. I said that's it we are going over there. We stop to talk to the guy and he is super nice. Turns out it was a replica but who cares, it was nice! He tells us that he has a friend with a '73 AAR clone. I got super exited. From the pics I could see on his phone it looked right and he said it had a 6 pack and all. He got us in touch with the and the rest of that is history. Sort of. As you can see from the pics at the top of the page it is not exactly an AAR clone but still a nice car.
We made a deal and ended up with the car. The pictures hide a grip of body work that was done and would need to be re-done someday if you wanted a really nice car. Mechanically the car was sound.
So fastforward 6 days.
I get a text at work, my wife says that the guy with the '74, he is pissed cause some guy bid up the car on ebay and then bailed. He told her that the car was hers if she still wanted it.
Being the great guy/husband I am I told her we would make it work if she really wanted it. We went up a couple days later with the very little cash we had left. When we see the car, it is nicer than I expected. The body work is all done, with my amature eye it looks very good. It has a 440 which I wanted and the body work is done which she wanted.
We left a tiny amount of cash with the guy and a promise to come with the rest of the money within a week.
I made my wife post the green car on craigslist later that day and it sold two days later.
We now own a different car, I will post some pics when we stop getting buckets of rain here.

Sorry for the novel but I hope you all got a good laugh at our expence  :)
At least my wife is happy and I got a big motor!  Someone somewhere up there must have been looking out for us, I feel like I should lock myself in my basement for a few years cause I must have used all of my luck for a good long while.
Thanks for listening and I am still happy to be a member here

Please keep the teasing to a minimum.

Moparman, I did not. I talked to him and he is more of just a horder. He likes cars. This is his first mopar and I couldn't even figure out why he wanted one other than he has a built 67 camero that gets 4 mpg and he wanted something that looked cool he could cruise and get better gas milage. He was a pretty cool guy his fist offer was $100 over what I had in the car so I accepted it and moved on. I think he got a good deal and I think I got a great deal. Funny enough besides the front seats I liked everything about the interior of the green car better. But wiring is my best suit so at least everything I need to do to the new car should be easy for me. I was a bit afraid of the body work ahead on the green car anyways.

OH! the best part of the deal, I got my wife to agree to letting me get a '71 cuda project someday to build as my retirement car. Now that time in my life is no where close but at least I have something to save for and look forward to!
