1969 Trans Am convertibles- I want a recreation
« on: August 15, 2013 - 02:12:29 PM »
Not to say I'm giving up my cuda clone, but I have lately set my sights on a firebird convertible.
If you dont already know, the 69 vert is as rare a find as 71 hemi verts, and nearly as pricey, but....tribute cars are more affordable than hemi clones, with decent drivers selling for in the $20ks.
I have always loved the 69 GM pony cars, having actually used my older sisters hand me down 69 camaro for a semester back in college in the 70s.
It was a ralley green automatic with z-28 stripes, and those cars have always had a spot in my heart, but the camaros are so dime a dozen. The firebird is much like the cuda was to the challenger. Only sold about half as many as the camaros, and they are obviously more rare today, so you dont see them often.
And when I found out the trans am was introduced in 1969, and then of course that was the only year of the vert for a couple generations, and then only 8 were made, with 7 known to exist today. Thats when I first thought it deserved a spot next to my cuda.
I am not in any hurry. Been casually looking around for a few months now, and will probably have to sell my turbo stealth first. I just dont really have the room for another any other way.
Anyone have any advice or knowledge of nice tributes for sale?

Almost every clone Ive seen has a black top.
I am not absolutely positive, but the trans ams only came with white. Not that I would go to the extra effort and cost of swapping a perfectly good top, but how much would it cost to swap? I watched a powerblock episode where they installed the vert top on the year one 69 trans am tribute, and with those 2nd gen honeycomb wheels, that car is my FAVORITE, but they made it look like rocket science to put it on and adjust it. Way beyond my abilities.
Also, the ram air setup. The best tributes have installed it with the proper connections, but not a definite for me. Really cool though...probably expensive and a lot like the air grabber or a shaker setup.
And the hood tach...thats a definite. I love those tachs, even though they werent very practical, but then, that describes the WHOLE CAR.

If you pulled the trigger on getting one:

1. One ready to drive (higher priced) with little or nothing to do?
2. A nice non T/A (medium priced) then convert it?
3.  Low cost and build from beginning to your taste?

Man I love those cars. Back in the day I wanted one, a convert. Thanks for stirring up old memories.
You sure don't see those driving around.

Yep, hood tach such a signature item on late 60's  performance Pontiacs.  Stephen Cox would be proud...
