Re-use cometic head gasket?
« on: August 08, 2013 - 02:19:24 PM »
I will be needing to figure out the pushrod heightfor my new short block and was wondering if I mocked it up with a set of cometic headgaskets would they be able to be re-used for the finall assembly? If not then I will order three or not do a mock up?
The block was machined for cometics but the cyd heads will need to be resurfaced before final assbly so not sure if the current marks from the felpro 1009 will markup the gaskets? even IF they can be reused after being compressed? :clueless:

Yes, they were manufactured to be reusable. I have reused mine on my Daytona r/t and not had any problems, even with 20psi. Just make sure to spray both sides with a nice thick coat of copper spray.

Just don't torque to full value during mockup. The compressed thickness will be negligible.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I agree that yes you can re-use the gasket especially not running it / no heat cycle , under torqueing it couldn't hurt either

when you measure for the pushrod length make sure the adjuster screw is turned out approx 2 full turns from bottomed out this will give you wiggle room without being extended out too far with the adjuster .

I had to remove one Indy head to fix a valley cover oil leak after running for a year. No problems so they can be reused and my CR is 10.75:1

Thanks guys, sounds good. I opted for slightly less comp than yours with 4-6 month old 91 octane avail outside of town.

I run 91 octane with 36º total @ 3000 and no pinging ------ its those heads!! I use 94 when I am near it.
