Hood Hinges
« on: August 24, 2013 - 09:49:25 PM »
The guy who is going to do the body and paint on my car says the hood hinges are worn and need to be rebuilt or replaced.  Does anyone know of a good and reputable place that rebuilds hood hinges? Also any idea what this costs?

-Thanks

I should have also asked if anyone has rebuilt these themselves?

I rebuilt mine.  oversized the holes and turned new rivets for them.  A lathe ,anvil and 3# hammer will do the job.  I don`t have measurements for you, but I do remember the length of the rivets needs to be dead on to keep them from being sloppy. I made one or two to testfit before I got it right. There are 2 different sizes on them too.

Thanks for the information Dutch.  Since I don't have a lathe I guess it looks like I will have to send them out to get rebuilt.

I rebuilt mine but unlike Dutch I made bushings instead of new rivets--much easier.  To disassemble the hinges I ground the small end off the rivets and drove them out with a punch.  To reassemble after installing the bushings I simply used a small weld to fasten the small end of the rivet to the hinge.  The hinges are left with a stock look except for the small pea sized weld spot and is virtually unnoticed.  PK

Pretty sure Restorick.com rebuilds them.

AMD sells new ones, but don't know how good they are.

Yea, so were mine.  I turned them round and enlarged the holes before fitting the bushings.  My gear teeth were also worn so I added metal by welding and ground them back to size.  Still a lot of work but they turned out really well.

Skunkworks, thanks for sharing how you rebuilt yours.

Ragtop, thanks of the lead on Restorick.

I will have to sit down and think about whether I want to see if I can do it myself or send it out.
