Aftermarket radio installed. Can original AM be reinstalled?
« on: September 30, 2013 - 11:35:00 PM »
Local shop that has disappointed on a few jobs and lost my trust told me we can't put an oem am or am/fm in because dash was cut to install a modern stereo.  Just looking at it, the modern unit seems to have a face plate the same size as the original.  It also seems to have a smaller housing.  In short, I am not so sure the dash has been altered.  I have a plastic oem bezel that seems cut for 8 track, plus an oem metal mounting bracket. I have an old am unit but I think it came from an a or b body.  I checked several suppliers websites and none sell a 1970 e-body radio face plate cover.  They sell wood grain covers for other models.  It looks to me like the 1970 e-body radio face plate fills the dash cutout so no wood grain cover is needed.  Are my assumptions right, and does it sound like I can install a period correct am or am/fm radio?

1st check this ... http://www.wardsclassiccarradiorepair.com/id15.html

I have installed several single DIN aftermarket head units & made no visible alterations to the car. What someones done to your car I don't know.
There are no A or B-body radios that will work, I've seen a C-body installed that looked OK but was a bit off.

So I have a 1971-1974 B-body radio.  I was pretty sure it was the wrong radio, but it came in the trunk of the cuda as a freebie.  Maybe I can swap it somehow.  I will try to post pics of front and underside of dash with current radio installed, in case it helps any.
