If you have this installed on your 440, what exactly does it do and do you also need a fuel filter or is it a filter as well?  If it is not a fuel filter, do you install the filter before this or after?

From the factory, if your car had that then it didn't have an in line filter. Original ones of those had screens in them, that's it. I believe they relied on the sock filter in the gas tank and screens on the fuel inlets at the carburetors.
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

That is a fuel vapor separator.  It has a return line built in to eliminate vapor lock. I would definitely put an inline filter in as well.
May not be factory correct but definitely helps.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Dave,
If you aren't worried about stock appearance and are just fighting a vapor lock issue. Just go to a local AutoZone and look at the back wall with the fuel filters. They sell a fuel filter with the small nipple for the 1/4" hose to hook to your return line. You get your filter and separator in one and it doesn't cost you the big bucks that the factory looking one will cost you.

I've bought them with the nipple out of the top and some out of the side.
