Engine won't start
« on: October 01, 2013 - 03:54:12 PM »
Took my car out for a nice drive last Saturday. It ran great and a great time. Try to start the car late Sunday afternoon, engine crank but will not start. I gave up after flooding the engine. Try again last night and same thing. Engine seems to fired for a second when I let go the key. I spent a few hours last night reading old threads and will be trying the following in order. Let me know if I am going about this the right way.

1. Check distributor to see if it is loose or can be turned by hand. I thought I tightened it last time after I set timing.
2. Check for loose wiring at the engine bay.
3. Check resistance of my 4 prongs resistor (which terminals to test?)
4. Check for spark from the coil.
5. Check voltage at the ignition coil.
6. Check gap at the reluctor and magnetic pickup.

Anything else beside start replacing parts?

Thanks

Ballast resistor , it bypasses it while starting & goes through it once the key is released , so it will act as you say trying to start until the key is released , the plugs may also be too fouled

CP, you are amazing. Save me a lot of time. Took 3 minutes to replace the ballast resistor. Turn key and engine started. The new one supposes to have lifetime warranty too. :jumping:

Thanks again.

Carry a spare anyway, they're cheap. Save you from being stranded someday.  :2cents:
