Need help with 1970 Challenger SE vinyl roof installation
« on: September 10, 2013 - 03:33:04 PM »
I'm presently restoring a 1970 Challenger SE and need some help on the vinyl roof installation. I need help on installing the vinyl material over the rear window insert of the SE model. With the insert installed the surface of the insert is not even with the roof surface, it is lower by about 1/8" and there is a 1/4 inch gap around the insert. Obviously all of these fitment irregularities would look terrible if not corrected prior to installing the vinyl top.

Can anyone help me with what is the correct method/procedure in installing the vinyl material over the SE rear window insert? I have used the search function with negative results. Thanks in advance !

A while back, on one of the e-body sites, I read a thread where they were discussing the filler that was originally used around the SE rear window and there were even some pictures of the material.  I've done some searching on this site and a couple others but unfortunately I wasn't able to find that information again.......sorry.

I had a 70 RT/SE and had a professional company replace my vinyl roof.  Before it was replaced, there was some type of padding surrounding the area of the rear small rear window.  The padding was on the insert section of the rear window.  I could feel the padding.  I did not watch them install the new vinyl, but when I got it back, it was padded just a bit more than when I gave it to them.  You could not tell unless you touched that area.
