Circle Saw's anyone?
« on: September 22, 2013 - 11:21:32 PM »
Ya I know this may seem a little strange from a guy that just had a hand injury........

That being said I'm in need of a new circle saw for my kitchen project. The table (shoe??)is so bent on my old one that you cant cut anything accurately anymore. Most of my tool experience is w shop tools not carpenter tools. My Milwaukee sawzall and drills have done me pretty well. I have Makita grinders that wont quit. My Dewalt cordless impact that has unreal power for a cordless.

Rigid - good warranty, but you will need it! Royobi about the same a Rigid just not as good a warranty.

I don't mind paying a little more for the right tool. My last saw I've had for 25 years. granted USA made... don't think that even exists anymore. ??
I'm looking for the right combination of power/weight/ durability. And something with lights to follow the cut line, electric brake would be good too.

I've been reading reviews on Amazon... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz     :dunno:

Bosch tools are good at moderate price.  Most home stores like Home Depot and Lowes carry them.but they all cut fingers!

Buy a worm drive.  If your right handed.
The blade is where you can see it when using your right hand.
I'm a professional home builder and have many styles of saws.
My favorite is the good ole Skilsaw Mag 77.
Several styles with different options.

Ok,I agree with the Skill 77 for a circular saw!  I thought Bigs was talking circle saws as in cutting round holes.  I use nothing bit the Skill 77 for carpentry.

I always used Makita circle saws. They're inexpensive and they've  got a pretty long life. Also, if you get one with a plastic case, the case holds 6 beers quite nicely. I have a couple of OLD Skil saws with aluminum bodies that belonged to my dad. Those things are still going strong too, but they weigh a ton.

I use 2 different saws. Back when I was working for the fire department, I ran a construction outfit on my days off. I used a Skilsaw wormdrive 6-1/2" for most cutting because it was accurate and powerful. It was also very heavy and not suited for overhead cutting. I also use a Makita 7-1/4" saw for overhead and cutting that was not on sawhorses. I still have them both and use them whenever a home project comes up....

Thanks for the imput guys.  :grinyes:

I see lots of recs for Makita here. Now heres the $1000 question are any of these recs for the "newer" Makita's?  I've seen they have recenty switched production to  YOU KNOW WHERE (china) :dunno:  I've read a bunch of reviews on table/shoe issues. I will say my Makita angle grinders ROCK! but I've had them a long time - JAPAN Made....

I am a frame carpenter by trade and have good experiences with Skil and you will find that the Mag 77 is the industry standard. I also used Porter Cable for several years before it was stolen. It was good as well but as anyone in the carpentry field can tell you the Skil Mag 77 is going to last you for the rest of your life if you treat it as a tool should be treated and not totally abused. Even if it is abused it will outlast any other saw.

I was a little confused on the wording too. A circular saw is what we are talking about here. To make circles in wood you would want a hole saw.

My last saw I've had for 25 years. granted USA made... don't think that even exists anymore. ??

I use to buy mostly Craftsman tools because I liked the quality, the warranty, and the fact that they were made in the USA. Picked up a couple of new Craftsman tools recently and they were all stamped "made in China". Sad to think that it's actually more cost effective for them to make it in China and ship it halfway around the world then it is for them to make it here like they use to.
Cheers!

I bought a Bosch C5. Sets up like a worm drive for better visibility,  but much lighter weight. Bosch quality. You'll have to order online.
