Themoquad carb idle question.
« on: July 06, 2014 - 06:53:42 PM »
My 71 340 4-speed Cuda idles great at start up but when its warmed up it idles a bit fast and I just want to turn it down. Has original TQ Carb.
My question is which screw do I turn once engine is warmed up to turn idle down a  bit and which way do I turn it.
A pic of the exact screw would be great as I think there are a couple of idle screws identified in the book I have for fast Idle.
As always thanks and much appreciated.
Tim

On my '73 there are 3-adjustments originally ... does yours still have a functional idle stop solenoid on the right side?
That is where the final idle adjustment was originally made, mine was removed long ago so I rely on the small screw on the left for warm idle & of course the big ole fast idle screw that rides on the fast idle cam for fast idle. Left turn lowers Right turn raises RPMs
If your mixture screws are out to far (lean) you won't be able to get idle low enough. If that doesn't solve it then could be your timing.

Attached pic of mine. Hopefully it came out ok.
Car runs great and like I say just idles but fast once warm.   I want to see if I can just turn the correct screw to turn down a bit. Like I said idles great at start up.

sometimes a vacuum leak can create a fast idle
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

Make sure the fast idle cam isn't hanging up. It should not touch the fast idle screw when the choke is all the way open. That's the one below your pic.
