Speedo acting crazy
« on: January 13, 2017 - 02:17:16 PM »
Hope somebody can help me figure this out. Hooked up my speedo cable to the speedo today. I want to have somebody clock me so I can get the correct gear for it. I took it for a drive and the speedo was just bouncing all over the place, from 0 to 100 MPH and only settled down at a complete stop. Has anybody ever seen this before? Does it sound like the gauge itself or maybe the speedo gear. The cable is new. Thanks for any help in advance
Mike

If the new cable didn't come pre-lubricated (or even if it did it might not have been adequate), get some cable lube and apply it.  Also make sure you don't have too tight of a curve at any point in the cable routing.

I tried to lube the cable today and to be honest, I don't know what the hell I'm doing out side of just spraying the lube down the cable. Do I need to remove the cable from a he car and hold it up so the lube works it way out the other side? Any help would be great. Because what I did was unsuccessful.

Thanks, Mike

Disconnect the cable at the speedo, slide the cable out of the housing, apply light grease, slip the cable back into it's housing & reconnect.... Chances are the problem is the speedo not the cable but lubing the cable is free & won't hurt anything...

I found this somewhere online, can't remember where, of a formula to determine the number of teeth to use for the speedometer gear in the trans. Might have even been on cc.

Number of teeth = 259*(axle ratio / tire diameter)

Crap.......bad news for me. I took my speedo cable out and lubed it with white lithium grease and tried it out today, it was still bouncing. Thank you wild1R/T for sending me in the right direction. So I guess that means I have to rebuild the speedometer itself. Any tips or suggestions about me doing it myself or does it have to be sent out to somebody to have it done.

Not much you can do.. You might get lucky just applying lube to the shaft area, something in a spray lube that creeps into tight areas but heavier than a typical penetrating oil.... Product I have & would use in this application, Wurth SKS-2000... Likely it'll need to go to a vintage instrument repair shop... Instrument Specialties, Redline etc...

Do you think it would be better to rebuild or buy a new repo?

There is a restoration shop in Harrowsmith ON called Mr Heaterbox. They do exellent work and you will get some advantage from the exchange rate assuming you live in the US. Would be worth an email inquiry at the very least.

Thanks guys, I have decided to go down the rebuild road. My clock has never worked since we've had the car, so I will take the opportunity while I have cluster out to have the clock repaired also. And thank you blown motor for link. I called and spoke with them and their price and timeline seemed pretty reasonable so I'm going with them.  Thanks again everybody for the info and as always, all the help.
