dollar for dollar, the 383 will easily out power it and out torque it,  Also, look at mopar muscle a few years back, with there 340 , 383 build ups. The 383  killed it in power. Just from experiance, i had many 383s that i built and dynoed, my 383 in my challenger made 499.6 hp and 505 ftlb of torque, on pump gas. nothing exotic here, just a little portin and good intake and cam selection. when i had my T/A challenger, i built the 340 very similer to the 383, but with higher comp. 10.8to1  fully ported heads, and solid cam etc. and i beleive it made 455hp  and 440 ftlb of torque, and it cost alot more to build the 340. 383s dont run hot, they get decent gas milage and u can rev the hell out of them . If u want to save alot of weight, get the aluminum water pump housing and water pump, and aluminum intake. u will be very close to the weight of the 340.  GO 383!!!!!!!

With the availability of the big blocks out there right now, I would have to go with the 400 if I was going to stroke it and put some real goodies in it. I had a 400 in my Chally when I got it and probably should have just did exacactly that but I ran across this killer 500 stroker built from scratch with a 440 siamese bored block and many goodies already in it and couldn't pass it up. I probably would have built the 400 if I had it to do over again just becase I could have saved a bunch and had similar power. Where you already have the 383 that could be built easily to run very strong either by building it as a 383 or building it into a killer  stroker, I'd stick with that. To each his own, I am a firm believer if you like what you have and are happy with it, no one should argue with you about what they like or don't like, correct or not, desireable or not etc.  unless you ask and this is the case here soooo, getting a bunch of opinions here, no arguments just a lot of good honest opinions! Hope you have a blast building what ever your heart desires!!
