where to get power for new head unit
« on: August 28, 2013 - 04:05:32 PM »
I am buying a new Kenwood head unit. The previous owner had the wiring looking like a spaghetti bowl and I just ripped it all out...2 years ago. I was going to wire up the unit to the starter relay or do you think it would be easier to wire directly to the fuse box. Where do you guys have yours?

My Challenger had a lead coming off the fuse box with a triple end plug on it for accessories that had two open spots, was as simple as plugging into that. Which is funny, because you should have seen the tangled mess that I pulled out from the last moron that wired a stereo into it...

I used the starter relay, but the line is fused of course.   :grinyes:

You will need to make two power connections for a modern head unit, switched which the original wire will suffice & constant (to retain memory) which is low draw can easily be accessed from one of the terminals at the bottom of the fuse block, I believe it's labeled BATT.

there are 2 tri plugs in that area specifically for that , they use a bullet connector yellow is constant power & red is switched power or you can plug into the radio plug which has a red & orange wire , red will be switched & orange is for the factory lighting , I wouldl connect the red wire to the factory radio plug & the constant power tot he yellow tri plug
