Quick Question - door lock rods and mechanism
« on: November 03, 2013 - 05:49:56 PM »
Hi guys,

Quick question as I'm trying to get my pass outer door handle to work. How many door lock rods are there? Right now I have 4 total ( two on handle and one for inner handle and one for inner lock). Inner handle and door lock work fine.  Problem is I cannot get the door open from the outside. The rod lifts latch mechanism but doesn't do anything on the release hook.

I am trying to see if I am missing something on the latch mechanism as this side has never worked since I've purchased the car.  I really do not want to have to pull off the drivers door panel again to look but if I must, I will  :eek4:

I've searched old threads and trying to see if I am missing something or this is a simply an alignment issue. Rods are all in place.

Thanks in advance

Answer is hard to explain, but I'll try. On the outside of the door just above the latch you'll see a 1/4 hole. With a flashlight if you look in that tiny hole you'll see an Allen head bolt, loosen that bolt and adjust the door handle rod.
Looking inside the door while operating the handle you'll see which way you need to go. I love working on E Body doors !

It could also be that the door is locked

Problem solved by loosening that bolt and fixing alignment. Knew it had to be something small after changing the handle and those annoying rods and clips  :stomp:  :banghead:

Thx again

I'm glad it worked out, I knew that was the problem. When I restore an E Body I always adjust that rod so the the door will open with minimal pull on the handle. I hate when you have to reef up hard on the handle to open the door. :nono:

Hey my doors will not lock on the '70 Challenger.  Any idea what I need to do?  Pull panel and check rods?  Bribe car genius with a 6-pack?  Check NSA files for text messages about e-body doors? :dunno:

I would pull the panel and double check the rods going to the lock cylinder.  If you end up pulling the panel then it would also be a good time to align handle rod for easier door access.  As anlauto mentioned above break Allen bolt (5/32) loose and adjust rod.  Good luck
