A-833 4 speed

Found an A-833 out of a '72 cuda, guy sais it shifted up fine, just had issues downshifting going into first while moving..SYNCHROS??

anyways $300 sounds like a pretty good deal doesn't it?

looking to do an auto to 4 speed swap in my "73 challenger, so this would be a start.

could be a worn syncro but often 2 nd syncro will go bad long before 1st gear , is it an OD ?

Non OD ...23 spline.

I had an '81 dodge truck with an NP435 that would grind into first unless you were basically stopped, those had a granny first gear though, and was never used unless climbing a mountain or pulling a house.

Is first in an A833 relatively low also...don't think a person would need to shift into first unless stopped anyways.

the OD is exceptionally low , the regular 4 spds are not though , nice to have all the gears available at any time

So I am assuming non OD would be the way to go for racing. What about the weight because of it being cast instead of aluminum, plus the extra weight of flywheel and clutch, which combined are a lot heavier than a converter, and the extra linkages, pedal, etc.  Does anyone know what type of extra weight compared to an automatic setup.

As much as I love manual, and would have a blast with it in my Challenger, is there anything to gain going this route?

Sadly as I have found out there are a ton of OD A833's for sale that are marketed as normal A833's so caveat emptor!

Overall the 4 speed is lighter than the 727 even with the flywheel , most ODs are Alum so weight savings  :2thumbs: , I used an OD for racing for years , I was able to run 4.30 gears 3 gears down the track & still cruise on the highway in OD :2thumbs:

Is there something in the ID on the trans to identifiy and what would you be looking for in a overdrive unit.

the # stamping on the side of the case will determine the gearset used , but there are at least 5 non OD gear sets & 2 OD
I do not have the reference for those #s here
 it is easy to tell though ,
 1- most ODs are alum case & have a frost plug at the front of the counter shaft
2- the lever should be pointed up for a regular 4 spd , The front lever was pointed down on an od but this is easy to change to hide an OD
3- shift into 3rd if the front lever is up from the center bolt shift towards the rear , if it is down shift to the front , now turn the input shaft & fell the out put , if the output is turning slower iit is Not an OD if it is turning faster it IS an OD

Another sad fact, the one I bought which I had to toss actually was stamped a correct A833 but someone had stuffed OD parts inside it.
