Crate engine enquiry...
« on: April 08, 2005 - 03:17:39 PM »
Hey guys,

I have another quick newbie question regarding crate engines. How hard is it to drop a crate engine into a e body? I don't really care about matching numbers in a car. I'm looking at a 340 or 360 engine. Also how much does a good condition complete e body go for, with little to no rust, engine and transmission less? Thanks alot in advance!

Hey Geordie . . . first I don't think you can get a crate 340, but there is 2 different 360 blocks available.  As for dropping it in . . . not too difficult.    Good condition e-body price??  Well . . . the year will made a difference??  Is it a 4 speed??  Auto on the floor??  Definitely need some more info to give you proper advise on this one!

Oh Geordie,
There are MANY variables in that equasion. To get away the cheapest, look for a 72-74 E-body. If it doesn't have the engine or tranny, that shouldn't  be too much of a hit to the wallet. They only make the 360 crate motor. I believe that is somewhere in the 3-4K range.

Thanks for the updates guys,

I don't have a specific car in mind yet but let's say I was looking at a 70-71 without engine or tranny, nothing special, no four speed for anything, just a basic automatic car? And what would be the price of a 72-74 with the same specs? Thanks alot, Geordie.

best thing you can do is go to eBay, and start scoping out what the high bids are, NOT THE BUY IT NOW, but the what people are actually bidding.   See stuff you like and then put it on your watch list to keep track of it.

Theres WAY too many variables, but assuming nothing special youre gonna spend 6-10K on a motorless and trannyless 70 in ok shape.  Even a total turd will bring 4K.

How much of a project are you looking for other than the Motor ?  Paint, interior...  ?

Be Aware the crate engine usually does not include carburator, exhaust maniflolds,  and maybe not a distributor either.
