Glove Box Door (Stud Threads Stripped)
« on: November 23, 2013 - 08:17:48 PM »
See attached photos.  One of the studs on my glove box door (for the open/stop bracket) has stripped threads (actually, they're totally gone).  Does anybody have any suggestions on the best way to remedy this problem, other than buying a replacement/used door?  I already tried putting JB Weld on the stud, and then tried rethreading it with a nut, but that did not work.  Thanks.

Hi, Since you can't get behind the damaged stud. I would cut the stripped stud off flush. Then drill the remaining stud out with the tap drill size of the thread size you want to replace it with. Once the thread is tapped out and the new stud installed, I would put a nice tack weld or 2 on the base where the stud threads into to glovebox door. This will keep it in place and not spin when you tighten the nut.

Or, get a bolt with the same thread as original, not a high grad bolt. bore it out and tap it with a suitable tap to you have an internally threaded stud, then with a die nut thread teh stripped stud on the glove box to match the internaly threaded stud, then simply loctite and thread it on, once set your back to matching studs

Real simple fix.
Just put some black windshield urethane inside the black bell nuts and maybe a dab under the bracket itself and let it cure. :2cents: Once cured it's hard as a rock and I doubt that it won't hold up to all those beverages up put on it when in the open position. :drunk:

So ... Here's the outcome.  Taking the advice of all, I came up with a collective solution.
1) I cut off the the stud flush with the back of the door using a dremel and cut-off wheel.
2) I drilled out the remainder of the stud using a bit the same size as the stud.
3) I located a screw with the correct thread (#8x32).  This happened to be a screw with a combination (flat/phillips) round head.
4) I used a drill bit the same diameter as the screw head to recess the stud hole.
5) After being satisfied with the test fitting, I roughed up the head with emery cloth and applied epoxy into the hole; then set the screw head in place.
6) After the epoxy cured, I cut off the excess screw threads to be the correct height as the original (1/4").
7) It's now ready for paint.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and inspiration.
