12V + Ignition switch wire
« on: December 10, 2013 - 09:42:24 PM »
Before reading this, I need to know this for my challenger as well (still working on the wiring), but in this context the problem is on my brothers non-mopar, the problem however is still the same.

The basic problem, is it possible to overload the 12V+ ignition wire with to many accessories?
Could this cause the car to perform badly because the distributor is one of the components wired to the 12V+ ignition?

I'm repairing some of the wiring on my brothers car for him and there are a lot of accessory wires already plumbed into the 12V ignition switch wire which is approximately 12-14 gauge. A previous owner did a real number on the wiring system, so the under dash wiring is an absolute mess. There are so many wires in there, you can't see the metal structure of the dash. The obvious solution is to start from scratch, but neither of us have the spare time to do it ourselves or the spare money to pay some one to do it. Sorry for the low quality photos, its the best I can do with my phone, while lying under the dash

The last thing that I have to wire in for him is a new HEI style distributor into the 12V+ ignition. The instructions for the distributor requires a 12 gauge wire to be used from the distributor to the 12V+ ignition wire.

Thanks in advance, once the distributor is wired his car can go back on the road!

Sure you can overload any cuircit.... Run a wire from the battery through a relay that is connected to the ignition switch, should eliminate any voltage problems. issue

The way I would handle it is to use relays , use the 12v feed wire to switch on the  relays & shunt power from the the start relay battery terminal to feed the accessories you have added .

Relays will work perfectly! I should have some spare as well, if I'm lucky my box fuses will have the sizes I need as well.
