Lower fender patch panel
« on: December 24, 2013 - 11:41:02 AM »
Hi Guys, A question for you body work guys i have these old lower fender patch panels and would like to know if they should be butt welded or overlap welded? Also should i use the whole patch or cut it at the body seam in the fender or below the seam ? Does anyone know what gauge these are; there old parts? Have not removed the fender yet but what do you do for the inside bracket if it rusted out? Thanks for any help!!!

I butt welded mine. Only use as much as you need. If the metal is bad only six inches up, cut out 6 1/4".
As far as the brace, you really can't tell until you cut the top skin off. Save it if you can. AMD patch panels come with
part of a brace.

I don't know about "BUTT" welding....I would used a mig welder....

I wouldn't over lap the seem though, and just like said above, only replace as much as you need AFTER a good cleaning of the fender....just don't assume rust is only in one place...Correctly strip the entire fender and fix all the rust.
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !
