    I was replacing the glove box. I reconnected the wire to the glove box light and a minute later noticed the light wasn't on. Got checking and burned my finger on a hot bare wire. Then I noticed smoke rolling out of the dash. At some time in the past someone ran a wire directly from the battery terminal in the fuse box to the glove box light with no fuse in the line :22yikes:. I'm not sure why it shorted out in the first place but it melted the coating on the wire from one end to the other. It was real scary for a few minutes when I saw the smoke.

    Ouch! That's why a battery disconnect switch is awesome. You don't have to hunt for a wrench while your car burns up! Looks like some of that wiring is extension cord wires?? Might just be my small 15"monitor! Glad you caught it before it burst into flames!!  :22yikes:

    It's funny because the glove box light was the only light that worked when I bought my car.   :stomp:

    So, I'll tell a story that will hopefully ease your pain. I'm in the electrical field by trade, so that makes this story particularly embarrassing.   :-[  I'm installing the hard brake line front to back. I have the battery disconnected, but for some reason that escapes me, I was too lazy to take it out of the engine bay. So I'm sliding in the brake through the engine bay towards the rear, when all of a sudden my battery turned into a welder. The brake line had touched both terminals of the battery...smoke, sparks, and me burning my fingers on the now hot brake line.   :swear:   What a dumb azz!!

    59, the other wires are speaker wires for an aftermarket stereo. I didn't put those in either...........wow, I wonder if the radio is fused :clueless:

    You're not alone.  I too was in the automotive electrical trade for a few years.  I have had a few wires make themselves bare and a couple wrenches that have "welding slag" on them from falling on batteries.  Any time you catch it before it becomes a permanent issue is a good day!

    I spent the evening running new wires for my Vintage Air system, and a new oil pressure gauge.  I put the battery in the trunk, made new battery cables, and rerouted the alternator wire to the positive battery cable at the starter.  I have a new under dash harness.  I still have connect power to the AC system and the computer for my transmission.  Now after reading all of this, I am FREAKING OUT that eventually I will have to actually hook up the battery.  My plan is to leave all the fuses out and add them one at a time so I don't start my new cuda on fire if I screwed it up!!!  I really hate electrical work.  It still seems like magic to me.  I am sure I will be asking a lot more questions BEFORE I ground my battery.  Wish me luck.   :dunno:
