Starter relay and mystery wire question
« on: January 07, 2014 - 10:45:28 PM »
This old wire was attached to the bottom flat post on my old starter relay. Any idea what it may be for? My relay has 2 flat blade terminals.

Ground through tranny interlock or clutch safety switch

Okay. Thanks. That makes sense.
If i ground this can i bypass the switch and get it started?
Not having any of my seat belt and seat weight sensors hooked up, will this also cause problems getting the car started?
Can all this be bypassed on a permanent basis?

I refuse to answer this question to to "crappy pic syndrome"..... :stirpot:

YES...you can run that wire straight to ground and the car will start in any gear. If it's a standard, it will also start in gear and THE CAR WILL MOVE, be careful.

Well i figured out that the original owner removed all of the parts for the clutch safety switch. He must have had the relay grounded to bypass. As i did a little research i found that a new switch from Roseville cost $359. It is no wonder he bypassed the switch.     :pulling hair:

I'd do some research and see if anyone has come up with an aftermarket replacement for the switch.

Is it a 1974?  1974 was the only year that manufacturers did the seat belt relay interrupt.  The car is only prevented from starting if weight is present and the seat belt is not fastened.  Leaving the weight sensors unhooked, bypasses the interlock entirely and the car will start normally.

Thanks.    Mine is a 73.    For now i am just going to ground it. When i get a spare $359, then i will buy a Clutch safety switch.

Like I said, you probably don't have to spend that much.  Someone has probably figured out an aftermarket replacement for a fraction of that price.

Brewers had the switches listed for $215, but they are out of stock. Problem is, they used to sell restored switches by Jules...and Jules is currently "out-of-stock" in more ways then one :angelwings: .. and yes he was a good friend of mine...

Till you get the $$$, ground it and be done with it.

But watch for starting it in gear..

there are other ways around it , I built a small bracket & used a spare brake light switch , so the pedal had to be depressed to start , it didn't have to be depressed all the way to the floor but it would not start by accident &  without at least thinking about pressing the clutch pedal  before starting it &   that was enough to get the car past an inspection even though it was never equipped with a clutch pedal switch from the factory .
