Windshielf wiper linkage questions
« on: January 28, 2014 - 08:48:36 PM »
Did a search but I couldn't find the answers.  I started cleaning my windshield wiper linkage (3-speed wiper-1970 'Cuda) today before restoring it and have a couple of questions:
#1 The arms were painted black by the factory but they were so dirty I can't tell if it was a gloss black, semi-gloss or flat black?
#2. The pivot points were obviously greased by the factory and my first thought was lithium grease.  However, I don't think lithium grease would have lasted this long and it looks more like plain old lube grease you would use on suspension parts; ball joints, linkage, etc.  Any ideas what is the proper type of grease for the pivots?

Thanks in advance.

The linkage arms were originally plated black zinc.  They were dark but had a rainbow affect to them.  This is how my original arms were done...and how Jules used to restore them as well.

If your pivots don't turn easily I would disassemble them.  You'd be surprised at how much crap is in there.  To get them apart, you'll have to grind off the top of the shaft where the metal is crimped over the piece with the splines on it.  To put everything back together, you'll have to slightly grind down the splined piece to expose some more of the shaft.  Then you crimp the end of the shaft back over onto the splined piece.

I just used wheel bearing grease on mine.

Thanks Burdar!   :2thumbs:  My pivots are very loose but I will grease them up before reassembly.
