Map Light Problem
« on: February 13, 2014 - 04:30:06 PM »
My map light works when I first got my car a year ago and quit shortly after. I changed the light bulb at that time but still nothing. So I finally got up my butt last week to try to find out what the problem is. There is no voltage when I measured the harness with the ignition key on. From the wiring diagram, there appears to be a time delay relay in there but I could not find it under the dash. May be that is bad? I assume it is not the same as the turn signal or the flasher relays. Anyone can tell me where it is under the dash and how to test it. BTW, all my interior lights works except the light by the ignition key which I have difficulty inserting the bulb.

your map light should work with the car on and off. Did you check your connection under the dash? Test light on the wire? Delay is for the light next to the headlight switch and key. That is how it works on my 74 chally. Believe the map light hooks into a 3 red plug above ashtray. Does your glove box light work? That is the same plug as map light.

Glove box light works. I will pull the ashtray this weekend to check. Thanks.

Possibly a bad switch.

There is always power to the light. The switch is on the ground side of it. I had a no connect between the switch and ground. I just ran a wire up to one of the screws on my glove box hinge to pick up a ground connection.

My map light circuit gets its power from the time delay hooked to the ign light too. It should be on when the door is open. Check for power at the bulb's wires when the door is open. Like Mike said, those switches go bad all of the time. Make sure that the ground terminal is tight, where it connects to the dash.
