Rear window install
« on: February 07, 2014 - 12:09:23 AM »
Okay, just spent the past hour searching for info on installing my rear window.  Think I got most of my questions answered except what kind off window adhesive to use.  Several threads talked about using 5/16" butyl tape and some recommended against it and said to use auto glass sealant instead.  So what's the current recommendation, butyl tape or glass sealant?  Also, if it is butyl tape, do you need to use a sealant between the edge of the glass and window frame, especially on the bottom so water won't pool, or is the butyl tape sufficient?
Thanks

"usraptr" = United States raptor - bird of prey = United States Bald Eagle.  FYI, somebody else thought of it first so I had to drop the "O" in raptor.

It was suggested to me to use both. The butyl tape so the glass sits at the right height, and the sealant
to form a very good bond and seal. Though I haven't installed the glass yet so I can't say how well it works.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I had Safelite auto glass put a new windshield in for me 2 years ago and all they used was sealant but I think the brushed on a little coating of some kind of primer before the sealant. Then I gave them an extra $25.00 to install my original back window and they used the same method. I should mention its a 73 cuda. New windshield and install back window came to 250.00 in my driveway. I never really looked to see the height but the trim went on fine.
