quarter window mounting hole problem
« on: February 10, 2014 - 05:58:20 PM »
While polishing the stainless before installing a new window seal I found this stripped mounting hole.

I can't believe I don't remember it being like this. I only took it out 30 years ago!!!

I was thinking of using lab metal to fill it in then drill and tap it out.    What do you guys think?  Anyone use lab metal before?

I would "hogg" out the back side and hammer a nut in there. :2cents:

take it to a machine shop and have a Helicoil fitted that way it is repaired correctly and you can use the original bolt Helicoils are actually stronger then plain tapped threads they use them for rocker arm and exhaust bolt holes in quality aftermarket aluminium cylinder heads and some OEM heads such as Mercedes Benz.

:iagree: Helicoil is the answer, and if you check with some of the hardware stores, you may be able to find the components to DIY. Good Luck :2thumbs:

Helicoil is a great solution

If you're going to be fixing a lot of these issues in the future, then buying the right tools and different size coils might pay off.
A machine shop, as mentioned, will be able to fix it for you as well. You could also find a source for aluminum welding, have the hole welded up, drill and tapped. All will take time and money. Probably cheaper to replace the window.

I tried to offer a quick inexpensive solution to your problem that you can do yourself at home for about $0.02 cents.

Often I run into problems like this when I'm re-assembling a customer's car. I try to find a quick reasonable and a cheap solution for my customer's. With putting a nut on the backside, there is no way the bolt will pull it through. I've seen plenty of Helicoils fail. :2cents:

Never seen a properly installed helicoil fail. Only fails when full helicoil to thread contact isn't made, or the drive
tang isn't removed properly. Maybe I'm missing something though.   :dunno:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I was going to helicoil it, I have a number kits but the hole is to egg shaped to drill out to the right size for the insert. Though maybe someone had tried the lab metal on some project or another.
I see a lot of the later style types for sale on ebay but have not seen a 1970 one. I guess I will keep looking.
