A/C heater box question?
« on: January 21, 2014 - 10:17:45 PM »
Hi all, I know eventually I will need to rebuild the heater box, but I was hoping for now, to put it off for a later date; this is a 73 A/C box w/ the vacuum controls. Heat works great, but for now only blows out of the main vents, doesn't do anything on defrost yet. In tracking stuff down, as I have never had this box off, looks like one line has come off - I've put a vacuum gauge on the hose out on the firewall, but it won't hold any vacuum. Does anyone know where this line in the picture may go - it's on the passenger side near the kick panel, and can it be done w/o having to take the whole thing out?

Also, I think I'm missing a piece of duct - in the pictures it would go from the circled part under the middle of the dash, to the vent on the drivers side - I can't remember if I removed and just can't find it, or if I never had it. Is this piece hard to find?

 and goes to this vent

I'm thinking your hose goes thru the firewall (behind teh carpet) and to the vacuum knob thingy in the manifold.

On the first picture the vacuum hose ties to the gromet in the firewall. From there it goes to the brake booster for vacuum.

On the 2nd picture you are missing a duct that goes to the driver side duct thats near the heater controls.

So, there is a little plastic fitting/nipple on the hose in the picture, it just pushes into the grommet? I can see the grommet under the hood on the firewall, but can you get to it from inside w/o having to move the whole heater box, or am I overlooking something?   :clueless:   Thanks

Yes, it ties into the gromet.  The gromet on the engine side should be tied to the vacuum.

My grommet has three screws that attach it to the fire wall.  You can see the hole where the grommet is located. sorry I do not have a close up of that location.  I think there might be some pics on another thread that might show it better.

I believe the vacuum hose doesn't go directly to the brake booster, but to the manifold, where the brake booster hose also attaches:

Here is a link to what my grommet looks like:

The vacuum hose goes thru the hole on the right, while the heater cable from your controller goes thru the nipple hole.  Not all cables go through this location, maybe it is only the a/c cars that do??

Thanks EB3 - I finally found it, the carpet had it covered up pretty good, and I wasn't looking quite far enough to the left (from the passenger seat point of view) - now I need to find a nice vacuum tee like you have on your manifold - I was pretty sure I had one, but I can't seem to find it now.
