Individual air cleaners for 340 six pack
« on: March 19, 2014 - 02:27:57 PM »
I'm collecting parts to install a six pack on my 340 70 Cuda.  I like the look of the individual air cleaners, such as those offered for the holley 2300 carb by obrien truckers.com.  Has anyone on this board installed these air cleaners?  They come in two heights, 1 3/4 and 2 1/2.  I need to fit these under a stock Cuda hood.
Thanks.

small air filters like that might restrict air flow

Pontiac used that set up on their tri powers. Looks good. I bet the 2 1/2" air cleaners would fit, but not 100% certain.
Do you know how tall the 6 pack filter is?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Don't know the height of the stock six pack air cleaner, but it looks pretty thin.  The individual air cleaners mentioned above are 3 1/2 inches tall with the 1 3/4 air filter and 4 1/4 with the 2 1/2 air cleaner.

I think you're gonna need to find drop bases to make them fit.  :dunno:

create a mockup to see if they will fit.
make 3 items that are the height of the air filters.
place them appropriately on the engine, then have
playdough above the items so when you close hood,
you see how much clearance you have.

Didn't look at the ones u mentioned but our 2300 carbs are d shaped where the air cleaners mount. All others are round top. There is at least one set out there. A couple members on here have them. If I am correct someone posted their setup of 6 bbl EFI on a 440 with them recently and someone with a highly modified custom set up on their 1st gen cuda race car.

David or anyone else with a stock six pack air cleaner, could you measure the height from the bottom pan to the top of the air cleaner lid, I'm curious what that measurement is.
thanks for your help

I will measure mine tomorrow, perfect timing as I have to do it anyway to cut some fuel bowl vent tube inserts.

Thanks for that info!
I looked up the height of the FRAM CA 332V (stock type six pack) air filter and it is 2.06 inches.  I don't believe there is going to be room for the individual air cleaners, but before I buy the six pack air cleaner I'll do a mock up and measure the clearance.  Might be a few weeks before I get to that stage.
