Replace dashboard / dashpad plastic
« on: April 07, 2014 - 05:11:46 PM »
My dashboard plastic sucks abit as they have put one of those new rubber layers over it.

Thinking of buying a new one..

Is the dashboard plastic easy to replace or does one have to dismantle the entire dashboard to do that? Will the whole dashboard have to come down for such an operation?

Hey Luke,
I just installed a cap on my dash.
I'll have to say it was easier than I thought it would be.
And I really like the way it fit AND looks.
Here is my link.

So what I currently have is a dash-pad with a dash-cap on it. And what I want to install is a new dash-pad. If I now got the terms for it correct...

Tnx guys.  :2thumbs:

You will need to remove the entire dash pad; it has a metal frame and is screwed to the car body; remove all guages, ac and heater hoses and everything else connected to it. Dash pads are held in by screws up under the windshield (hard to reach but possible) and two on the sides.  Not for the faint of heart but not impossible to change out. There are two types of replacements; one that is molded onto an original steel frame (and you have to send them your core so they can make more), and the plastic type that is molded onto a plastic frame.  I do not know which is better but the plastic ones are cheaper.  I am talking about the entire dash pad/board; not a cap, which you say you already have.

Bought new in '71; I wanted the Challenger but they were $2850; too much $ so I got the 318, 3 speed on the floor, Twister Duster for $2100.

I ain't done yet.

There is a thread on here showing how to replace the pad. Easiest to remove the whole dash as an assembly
with all components intact. Swap out the pad on the bench and reinstall. Stay away from the ABS dash core and go with
the steel. It lasts a lot longer and won't warp. Roseville has a real good price on pads. Make sure you tell them
you're a member and get a discount. Good luck and ask lots of questions if needed.   :2thumbs:
4 screws across the top and 2 on the sides
If I cant fix it, it's broke
