Power Window kit options and review
« on: March 31, 2013 - 08:24:40 PM »
If you’ve read my build thread, then you know I installed a Nu-Relics (they make the kits for XV) power window kit.  However I could never get the passenger side working correctly.  No matter how I adjusted it would bind up at the top and the motor would start jumping and skipping teeth.  I’ll admit that it could just have been caused by my incompetence, but I got so frustrated that I finally put back in the stock manual regulator and just had the drivers side power.

I couldn’t really find anyone else that had the same kit except for Shafi Keisler and his red Cuda.  If you read his build thread he also had problems with the kit and ultimately swapped it out for the Electric Life kit.

http://www.keislerauto.com/the-maximum-overdrive-kuda/page-7.html

So that’s what I decided to do.  The Electric Life kit is a little under $300 at Summit which is quite a bit cheaper than the Nu-Relics kit (this is for 2 windows).  I never roll down the back quarter windows, so I didn’t bother with a power kit for them.

The first thing I noticed was the Electric Life doesn’t look nearly as robust as the Nu-Relics kit.  The Nu-Relics kit actually looks a lot like the stock regulator with a large motor hanging off of it.  The electric motor on the EL kit is smaller than the Nu-Relics, so I was worried how well it would work (turns out it works great).  So since I had all 3 sets here’s some pictures (Nu-Relics is the black one):

I figured I would weigh them at the same time (with a bathroom scale):

Nu-Relics:  8.5 lbs
stock:   7.5 lbs
Electric Life:   4.5 lbs

After installing the Electric Life kit I was able to get both windows working good and I’m really happy I made the switch.  The EL kit is much cheaper cost wise and lighter weight to boot.

One thing to keep in mind with these aftermarket kits, they are never going to work as well or as smooth as the power windows in your new car.  If you can get over that, then I’d recommend the EL kit.  Here’s a video I took showing the operation of the Nu-Relics kit and the Electric Life kit.  You can see the torque the Nu-Relics kit puts on the door (its a heavy duty motor).  If anyone wants to try the Nu-Relics kit contact me and you can buy mine cheap (maybe you can get the passenger side working).

Hopefully this helps anyone considering power windows.

Be careful of the EL motors, those are GM F-body window motors. They are notorious for going out. I had to replace them on my Camaro SS. They had big heavy side windows just like E bodies. Good news is they are cheap to replace.

The issue I heard with all aftermarket power windows is the lift vs lower speeds. There is no tension spring to counterbalance or assist the motor so they usually drop faster than they lift. Not that it matters all that much.

What are your opinions in that, having the different sets?

Glad you're happy,

I tried the Electric Life, it was the biggest disappointment.  Don't really see how they could work.
As mentioned, they dropped like a rock and really struggled to raise.

I talked to Electric life directly and they suggested I add a helper spring like the stock regulator.  I could tell they had heard this problem many times before.  I wasn't interested in doing that so I sent them back.  It only makes sense, just like a garage door, spring winds up on way down, slowing it down, then unwinds on way up, helping it lift.  Even the 40yr old factory parts have the assist spring.

Good luck

EL doesn't make rear quarter PW kits, right?  How are the NRs for the rears?

If you watch the video you can see the up and down speed and compare it between the two sets.  I think the Nu-Relics drop even faster, to the point it would scare you when you hit the button.  For either set, if you put the adjustable glass guide (the fuzzy part) very tightly up against the window you can cause them to struggle to raise, so it's definetly a balance and takes some work.

Like I said, I don't think they are ever going to work as nice as the windows in your new car.

That's correct.  EL doesn't make a PW for the rears.   They've had an option for them listed but have never gone to production with them.   They do make a universal PW for the rears that's basically an adapter that sits on top of the knob that your window crank would normally seat on.  This adapter is gear driven.   I don't know anyone using them though so can't say how good (or not) they work.
