Another shock question
« on: March 27, 2014 - 10:31:07 PM »
I have GasAdjust shocks on my car. I want to lift the back end about 3/4". Can I do it with another shock?

The only shock going to lift a car is an air shock.

:iagree:  As far as I know anyhow? Not a good way to lift the rear either. The structure that the shocks mount to was never designed to support the weight of the car.

Search on this site
"Re-arching rear springs"
and
Add a leaf"

I chose to replace mine all together, but some folks here have alternatives to total replacement.

:iagree:  Can't lift a car with a shock unless it's an air shock or maybe a coil over shock but as Brad mentioned that shock mount wasn't meant to carry that weight.  I heard stories of old Camaros with air shocks that when the shock mounts rusted and broke you could loosen the upper shock bolts from inside the trunk.  :roflsmiley:

I used a full length add a leaf as bigblue mentioned on an old 5th Ave years ago and it did get a little lift in the rear and wasn't too expensive.  The car handled better as well.  I don't see the full length leaves in the stores now but imagine you can order them. Not sure if there is a down side to those though.

Back in the day we used to install a "Load Leveler" Shock. I think that would give you the 3/4 extra lift you're looking for without the issues associated with air shocks. :2cents:

the shock crossmember is strong enough to allow the shock to cycle without taking any weight , any shock that lifts the car at all will transfer weight from the spring perches to the shock crossmember which is not a good idea . The only shocks that lift the rear are weight bearing like the coil over type or air shocks , anything else gas type or basic hyd will not lift the car at all . To properly lift the rear you can add a leaf or replace the springs .
