taillight gaskets

I went to install my 72 cuda tail lights tonight and it seemed that the foam gaskets were awfully thick,
putting a lot of pressure on the light pods. Anyone know if this is normal or if I need to shave the edge of the foam
for a better fit?

When I did my 70 lights a did some trimming of the gaskets as they were sticking out above and below the housing.

Gaskets are fairly cheap so I would say go for it!

I don't know Andy; I suspect they were made thick to take up the discrepancies between the panel and light. I'd snug them up and give them a day or two and then see if they don't relax and you can snug them up some more.  Ian

Wow,

  This is the polar opposite of my experience in buying after-market tail light gaskets for my 70 Challenger. Mine were too thin. That led to exhaust fumes coming in from the back all the way into the passengers compartment. Holy smelly clothes Batman!!

 I found some nice original gaskets on E-Bay, and haven't had a problem since.
