    I'm running a naturally aspirated 543 with a torqueflite 727 with a 3800 stall converter and 3:91 rear end & 1,000 cfm carb. I get maybe 8 miles to the gallon. But it's an outrageously fun 8 mpg's!! I don't usually go more that 50 miles one-way on a weekend cruise and I usually only drive it on weekends so I really don't care!!  :burnout:

    With something as big as a "543" you know it has to be thirsty!

    Curious ... I assume the 543 is made from a 440 block ... but what is the bore and stroke on that monster?

    Neat thread.  I feel somewhat better now, too.

    8-10 and I abso-tively am proven uncap able of not goosing it. Tried it, even made a solemn pledge before starting out on several occasions and,well, I don't have any sound system "inside " the passenger compartment, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!  :bigsmile:

    440 Magnum with a Holley 850 double pumper (I've come to the firm conclusion I am only preserving this car for someone who will eventually drag it, perhaps after it's 50th anniversary . . .)

    My 70 Challenger R/T has gotten up to 18.5 MPG.  It has a 440, flat top pistons, Stealth heads, Voodo 60302 cam, Thermo-quad 850 carb, 2.5 inch  exhaust with x-pipe, Mopar electronic ignition and 3.23 gears. Like most cars the faster I go the less the mpg.  The 18.5 is at no more than 65 mph and the wife as co-pilot ( :bigsmile:).

    The 543 has a 440Source stroker kit. It's a 440 bored .060 over and has a 4 1/2" stroke. It requires an external oil pickup as the crank counter-weight would hit the pickup tube. It's a lot of rotating mass, but then again it doesn't have to spin-up much as it makes peak horsepower at 5400 rpm, so I have my rev limiter set at 6,000 rpm. It's definitely a lot of fun and TONS of torque!

    At the risk of unintentionally derailing any thread, I have a question:

    Would swapping my Holley. 850 double pumper out for another carburetor improve my mpg?

    2nd question: would it be enough of an improvement to make the cost of a second carb worthwhile?

    I only cruise a couple of times a month and I'd like to more but, I can't afford to at just 8-10 mpg . . .  :(

    back before I swapped my cam from a RV cam to the "hemi grind" cam and swapped the stock intake to the TM6 single plane I would get 17.5 MPG on the highway. Now I'm at about 11 MPG

    never bothered to check, but I know its not good.  one day going up a hill I decided to hit it pretty hard.  I could actually see the gas gauge moving.  knew right then I wasn't in no prius  :woohoo:

    Haven't calculated for the city yet, but on the cruise to MATS this year I had one leg of the trip where I got 21.5 mpg cruising at 55 mph.  On the other legs I cruised at 70 mph and then averaged 19.5 mpg.

    My setup is a Gen III hemi with 3.73 gears and a 5 speed manual.  The overdrive is what makes the difference.  In my car 65 mph is only 2000 rpm.

    I get about 17.5 miles per gallon on the highway.

    The engine is a 5.9 L Magnum motor stroked to 408ci. The compression is 9.2 to 1 with a mild cam. The ignition is MSD. The engine is fuel injected using the 5.0 L Mustang's mass-air computer system which was modified with a custom tune for forced induction. The engine is supercharged using a Vortech Si trim. At 9psi, the engine puts out 670 hp and 644 foot-pounds of torque. When I run 14 psi, horsepower is 710 and torque is 740.

    The transmission is in a 518, and the rear gears are 3.23. The stall converter is a 2100 – 2300 stall. The exhaust system is 2.5 inches with an X-pipe and the flow masters.

    Stock 383hp auto 3:23 with 15's. Equals 15mpg @75-80mph. imperial btw ;)
    Had a 74 with a 80 318 added thermoquad all stock pieces except advanced 340 cam. 3:55 gears and 15" tires averaged 21mpg @ 75mph.

    I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.  Hard to figure out how you guys are getting these numbers.

    Even my 06 Mustang with 5spd/OD auto, 3.73 gears only gets 20mpg at 70mph?

    Most of those 318's that are getting such good mileage are 2 barrels. Your mustang simply sucks down more go juice.
