new relay and same starting issues
« on: April 10, 2014 - 09:28:56 PM »
im puzzled here. i crank the motor when its cold it will not start but once i hot the relay over it turns right over. i have two new relays and both do the same thing i have a good ground on the relay terminal. but when i hot the relay and let it run till warm and i turn the car off i can start it with the key right away. then if i go turn it off again and try it with the key it just cranks and no start. i have no idea whats going on. new ignition switch and turn signal switch. i dont understand how hotting over the +power post on the relay to the starter solenoid side of the relay makes any bit of difference. but thats the only way to start it. and with the key on i test power to the coil and i have power. i dont get it.

Similar issues have been traced to the connector at the steering column, the wide flat one, it's possible that the "start" wire(which is different than the "run" wire) is not making a good connection as the bullet shaped terminals easily can get pushed out of place or have corrosion on them. Same is true of the bulkhead connector on the firewall. Inspect, correct, clean and add some Dielectric Grease to the connectors.

Bullit is awesome  :worshippy

Getting new connectors may be difficult. You probably have to recondition what you have. Clean them up and lightly tighten up the connection with pliers.  :2cents:

I imagine you could but unless they are burned it would be easier to work with what's there, they can be slid out, I've used a paperclip to compress the catch, reshaped, cleaned & slid back in.
Don't know for sure where you would find new terminals.

Before you do anything unplug & inspect the terminals, you may find one that is lose/pushed out a little, re-seat the terminals if you find any & add the Dielectric Grease.  That may be all it takes.

The yellow wire at the end of the long steering column plug.  It goes to the #9 position on the bulkhead connector and on to the starter  relay.

Here's the wiring diagrams...http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=24
Brown wire goes through bulkhead connector #22 to ballast resistor for "start".
