hey guys about to do a upgrade on brakes for my cuda I wanted to get your opinions on brake kits. what are your experiences with "the right stuff" brake kits ? im looking at those or wilwoods the price difference is about $900. Any input is appreciated thanks

Wilwood are Ok but there are better available IMO , there are light weight are more race brakes & do not have dust seals ,
I have no specific recommendations but people have adapted Viper Calipers to the 11.7 " crossdrilled rotors & you have more brake pad options .

Just converted my drums to the Right Stuff discs on my '71 Chally after a lot of research and talking to guys on different forums and at the vendors.  The Right Stuff rears do require the green bearings, otherwise they will not fit.  Other than that everything went on without a problem, although I have not road tested them as I am waiting for my engine.  I think Neil is right the Wilwood are good for racing and a little overkill for just messing around town which is what I plan to do.  I decided to put the money I saved towards the other million projects on my car.

K I'm definitely gonna consider that guys.  I keep reading about the dust seals what difference does it make?

I have his rear 10.7 brake kit. It can use the stock style tapered bearings.

Dust seals keep the dirt out from between the piston & caliper body , dirt can cause the piston to not retract into the caliper locking the brakes on

It depends on which Wilwoods you're talking about. I know their 6 piston calipers do have dust seals now, and I believe that some models of the 4 piston brakes do as well. The old 4 pistons definitely didn't, but I think they went away from that style now that everyone is using them on the street on their pro-touring cars. You can look at their specs online and see which ones have seals and which ones don't.

Dr. Diff has some great offerings. I just upgraded my Duster to his 13" kit in the front with Cobra calipers. It uses a redrilled Corvette C4 rotor and cobra calipers with an aluminum hub. So far its been a great set up, comes with everything you need. I really like the idea that I can get replacement parts at the local parts store if needed. That's the only issue I have with some of the aftermarket kits. If they discontinue that model kit, you could be out of luck later down the road if you need rotors, calipers, etc. The only part of the kit that is aftermarket is the hub itself, which should last a good long time. Realistically, the availability of the rotors, calipers, etc probably isn't a big deal for lower mileage cars, the brake pads on my Challenger went 40k miles and the rotors are still in spec, but its something to think about. The Challenger just has the later 11.75" rotors and stock calipers on it, and they work pretty darn well on the street.

I haven't done the rears yet, but again Dr. Diff has a 10.7" or 11.7" rear disk kit that allows you to keep the stock tapered bearings. Green bearings suck. Yes, that's just IMHO, but Cass's kit allows the tapered bearings so that's the only kit I'd use if I convert to rear disks later. Right now all my cars have 11x2.5" drums, they do a pretty good job for street use.

I have right stuff disc brake conversion on my 71 Cuda and i say the "F" word at it all day long every day.  It used a "slider type" caliper which means it just floats and is held on by two flimsy plates.  It also uses rubber bands to keep the pads from clunking all over the place, which doesn't work.  These are the noisiest clunkiest brakes I've ever had and I absolutely hate them.  I want to try and buy a different holding system for the calipers that will bolt into the existing spindles if I can find it.  Anyone know about this?

I recommend against buying the right stuff system.  In addition to these problems, my system didn't include the easily breakable runner bands and when I received the system the rubber lines were too short and I had to go get 69 camaro lines, information that I only got after installing the system, having ptoblems, and then calling them.  My advice is to find a solid mounted caliper instead of a floating one.

I put the Wilwood disc all around last year. They stop great. I had stock drums out back and factory disc with police rotors up front. Tell you the truth the stock brakes stopped just as good for everyday driving. For me it was a looks thing. I have 18" wheels on the rear and 17" on front and I wanted something that will look good thru the wheels. When you have custom wheels drum brakes look kinda funky. Also I like the rear drum type E Brakes as the rotors are larger in dia and with the larger dia wheels on the rear everything looks balanced.

thanks for all the input guys I ended up going with 4 piston wilwoods all around with a 1 inch rotor

I use the Wilwoods all the way around too. I have had to replace the pads on all four corners one time in 9 years. They don't stop all that great when they get hot, but I know that and just mash the pedal harder...   :grinyes:  They are the drag race brakes though, but I use them on the street all the time. I just know their limitations and drive accordingly....

Using  the right compound it should bite harder hot , maybe a different pad compound is needed
