Looks like a small block engine ID pad to me. It is found on the left front of the engine block just below the left side cylinder head. The "parting line" you see is the seam between the block and the head. For the stamping, I see "FW340 P31750570" which tells me F=1970, W=Windsor engine assembly plant, 340 CID, P=premium fuel, 3175=April 7, 1970 assembly date per 10,000 day calendar, and 0570=the number of the engine built at the plant that day.
Cheers!

I wish the engine ID number was listed on a build sheet or similar as I cant read the engine VIN but can read the EID number, i'd like to confirm its a matching number car!! by the number it codes out at being made on the 12th Dec 72 and my car was made 18th Dec 72 so fair bet it is but solid confirmation would be nice. Down here the EID makes up part of the vehicle registration, we need to supply the VIN and the EID.

the car's build tag has this:

J0B: 340 290HP 3-2BBL 8 CYL
1970
Dodge Main, Hamtramck, MI, USA

000:    Full Door Panels
413:    Build Date: April 13
152617:   Order number

just wondering if the orange code in my pic was consistent with the build info

does it seem kosher?

e.g. engine built on April 7, car built April 13

Also wondering were T/A Challengers made at that time? I thought they were built in 69

I found this page
http://www.challengertaregistry.com/scca_trans_am.html

Shows that the races occurred from 19 April '70

This racing application form probably corrects my assumption...? April racing = T/A production started in April 1970

The engine assembly date of April 7th precedes the car build date of April 13th by six days which is within reason for production procedures at the time. As far as I know, none of the engine ID stamping data is found on the car's broadcast sheet. Finally, as for Trans-Am car production I don't know much about it other than a lot of the fender tags that I have seen seem to have an April '70 build date on them.
Cheers!
