HELP! Intake versus Exhaust valve

At the risk of looking like  jackass......

On a typical small block head---in this case a J head -- The exhaust valves are directly acorss from the exhaust port, correct?  SO the exhaust valves would be on the very front and back ends of the heads, and then two together in the center....the intake valves between those....right?

I am working on swapping out my springs and I think the previous install has the seals wrong!

The cup type "positive seal" seals should be on the intakes and the shorter "umbrella" type is on exhaust right?

If that is correct, the seals for cyl 1 and 3 so far were WRONG!  or am I having a brain fart?

The exhaust valves are exactly where the exhaust ports are; one at either end and the two centre ones. As for the seals thing, there are at least 3 schools of thought: 1-PC type on the intake and umbrella on the exhaust, 2-PC type on the intake and nothing on the exhaust, 3- umbrellas on everything. In the day, it was all umbrellas and the thought behind the umbrellas or nada on the exhausts is to give them a wee bit more oiling due to their more severe operating environment. If the guides are nice and tight- but not too tight, you can get away with nada. In the worst case scenario, it puffs a bit on startup, but that's not a big deal. Your call.  :cheers:

Thanks.....so it appears whoever assembled the springs before me had them swapped.    :banghead:

Going to use the cup style on the intakes and the umbrellas on the exhaust.

Just to close this out -- yep-----the last person to do them switched every one of them.   :pullinghair:

All fixed up now.
