SMALL BLOCK THROTTLE CABLE ISSUES
« on: May 12, 2014 - 07:23:17 PM »
Hi guys; I just got a new repro throttle cable for my 318 on a 1970 barracuda, and the little ball on the interior side that goes through the hole in the gas pedal bracket broke off as soon as I pushed the throttle back on the carb linkage.  The firewall grommet is also loose in the hole that goes through the firewall. Who makes the best cables for small block 318 cars?  Thanks,Dave

Hey guys; Bought a second cable and the same thing happened. The cable broke inside the ball where it is crimped. The cable installed in the car is not stretched or hindered in any way and able to make it's full range of motion. I am starting to believe that this is a manufacturers defect and that the process of the crimping of the ball is in fact cutting strands in the cable. I could understand the ball failing and the entire cable sliding out,but for two cables to fail in the same spot, they have to be defective. These cables should be able to hold over 100lbs or more easily. I am not putting anywhere near that when I manually pull the throttle linkage or press down the gas pedal. This is for a small block 318 with the part number TC 254 that the repro companies carry. It is 22" long. If anyone else has experienced this,i would like to hear back from you. Thanks,Dave

Oh,and I talked to the guys at Roseville and they carry the same part number. They told me the cables are either defective or my linkage is not correct. I use the stock linkage and brackets on an edelbrock intake with Edelbrock carb, exactly like this picture. Anyone used this combination and had any issues,i'd love to hear from you and your solutions. If you know of superior throttle cables, please let me know.  Thanks,Dave

Hi Scott; Any pics of the setup on your engine? Are they tailored to fit your application or do you have to fab anything up?  Thanks,Dave

I'll see if i can get a pic today. No fabbing. Comes with a few different tips/ends to accommodate different carbs/setups

Thanks for the pic,Scott. I went to a car show yesterday and saw several of these "Lokar" throttle cable setups. I asked the opinions of a few people and showed them both cables from the repro house that broke under the crimped part of the ball and they agree that it's a manufacturers defect,so be careful buying these repro "factory correct" replacement cables guys.
