Rocker Arm Recommendations
« on: June 10, 2014 - 11:39:48 AM »
Whats up Guys,

I'm looking into a nice set of 1.5 Adjustable Rockers Arms for my short deck 496. I want something durable/good quality, any suggestions?  Maybe Harland Sharp? I Have Crane Gold now and not to happy with them. I want something with collars so I can get rid of the stock springs that go between the rockers on the shaft.

Harlands are good cept a bit pricey.

There was an issue awhile ago and I guess that still lingers in some folks minds.

For street use I prefer cast stainless over aluminum ,  I also prefer bushings over needle roller brg as the surface area is mauch larger & it will ot goove the shaft where the needles support the load , probably as few as 1/2 dozen needles support all the load , I have used many sets of PRW with no issues

As for Harland Sharps it's what you are trying to do. I wanted 1.6 and guess what hardly no one made a 1.6 for my application. As well, I wanted a rocker that could take heavy spring load as well. These rockers can take up to a .900 lift !!! Many other rockers would fail where I am treading. If I have any problems with them since I paid so much you guys will be the first to know.

As a testament to Harlands I found:

"The first set of Harland Sharps I owned I bought in 1986 for my SB 340. It had a .600 lift, long duration roller in it. We finally broke one in 1998, the set had just over 2000 passes on them and had been thru 4 sets of comp valve springs. The motor was shifted at 6800 and went out the gate around the same, maybe a little higher.

The first failure we had we replaced them all. They had never been rebuilt and the one that broke did on the bottom of the shaft, the load bearing surface. I took all them apart and saw minor wear on some needle bearings, but nothing significant. That set of rocker deserved to be put in a parts hall of fame. I have another set on my current SB 408, they have been on 3 years with no issues.

I paid big bucks (to me anyway) both times and had to clearance them for the springs on the small blocks as I run 1.550 springs (yes a pain in the but) however on my motor they took 3 lbs on the torque wrench less to turn the motor over and they have a great track record with me."

As well as riding on only 4 needle bearings:

"I believe that what Joe-Dokes means when he says they don't rotate is that they only run on the same 3 or 4 needles all the time. The entire needle bearing assemble doesn't rotate inside the rocker so there is only wear on the same needle bearings

As the rocker reciprocates on it's shaft or axis , the rollers do move a little this way and a little that.....but not in equal amounts. It might take five hundred miles for them to make one orbit around it's axis.......maybe more , maybe less.
But you are not riding on the same three or four rollers for the life of the rocker.
That , as we say in the business , is crazy talk."

If I was going to the level you are I would Use TD rockers !
Inviolet , it is similar , the listing is misleading , I have stainless rockers similar to the ones pictured on my engine & a number of other engines as well , they are bronze bushed but in the ad you sent the link to it also states roller brg so I am not sure if the PQX series is bushed or roller , either way I use bushed only .
I have disassembled engines using needle brg rockers & the shafts had major grooves in them admittedly it was a mild cam engine street driven ,  but the load brg rollers do not move far & will wear the shaft ....... I wish I had taken pix very few people believe me !!
I have also found them cheaper on Ebay around $400

I needed offset rockers because of my application which pushed me towards my choice.

I'll let you guys know how they progress but I'm expecting alot because of the pricetag.
