Neutral Safety Switch Plug
« on: June 14, 2014 - 12:32:23 PM »
Hello guys. I haven't been on here in a long time. I haven't driven my car much the last couple of years due to health problems. Anyway, enough of that as I obviously still have my car. The last time I was on here a couple of hall of famers on here told me to look at my NSS when I described my problems. They were right on the money as usual! Turn key, nothing! Jump at the starter relay and would crank right up. Anyway, my NSS plug keeps falling off the NSS! I've tried safety wiring (old aircraft technique), silicone and even tape. I'm good every time I drive it until I turn the key off, then I have to lie on the ground, burn my arm on the exhaust trying to get the plug on again. I just don't understand the design of this plug. There is really nothing but how tight the plug fits the pins that hold this thing on! Is there anything else I can try? I'm driving a 73 Challenger that has a 440 crate and 727 manual valve body tranny. If suggesting a new wire/plug harness or new switch or both, I can't find exactly what I need. I would appreciate a link if somebody knows. Thank you all for any consideration.

Thank you brother! Do you think I should just go ahead and get the switch too since my reverse lights aren't working? Is that the possible cause as well?

Evans wiring has the harness to , I used to buy 3-4 at a time , the plug gets hard & will not slide onto the NSS properly so it falls off so just replace the harness
I would trace the wiring for the reverse lights , if you have power to the NSS but no power out the switch is the problem , if there is power out of the NSS the problem may be back at the bulkhead or the plug behind the kick panel or simply a ground at the lights , If you have to replace the NSS you will lose a fair amount of fluid so be prepared , torque is 24 ft lbs

I had the same issue on many old cars over the years.  Leaky tranny and crappy connector.  I used thin "mechanics wire" and wrapped it around the base of the switch with the occasional loop between the wires to try to secure it.  Some attempts were more successful than others.  Sounds like you tried a similar approach.  A new harness and switch goes a long way towards keeping them together, and a dry tranny is a happy tranny.  Good luck!
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?
