Best factory head to port
« on: June 28, 2014 - 08:29:13 PM »
Im aiming for a totally stock/stealth look and I am not rue which head responds best to port work. Im also a little confused as to all the different types of factory heads. I know of the 452 open chamber heads, 906 open chamber heads and 516 closed chamber. Which are the most desirable and which pack the most punch after being worked over?

Thank You

after spending a ton of money on portwork, you can probably still find an aluminum head
that will flow better, at much less cost.

To look stock, can always paint the aluminum head.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

Muscle Motors use to do a lot of iron head port work, on Mopar heads.

It would depend on the current compression , if you can get away with it the 915 or 516 are best as they have the true closed chamber & with .060- .040 piston to head clearance you will have quench which will help kill detonation , Most people will tell you the 516 is useless , but with good port work , hard exhaust seats & large valves they do make power , I have worked over a lot of sets of them with good results .
If you have to use open chamber the 906 has the best intake port , all of the open chambers are similar often people use the 452 because it has hard exhaust seats but by the time you do a valve job the seats need hard inserts anyway .
The best production heads were the Max Wedge stage 3 castings good luck finding those !!
