mystery.. of the two copper washers
« on: July 09, 2014 - 04:56:52 PM »
Hello guys...

bought a set of exchange calipers for my Challenger...... because the "old ones " were shot.....   Now I am a Little confused..
because each caliper comes with  2 ( two ! ) copper washers to seal the brakehose against the caliper...

The question is...   WHY  2 ( two ) washers ? There is only one brake hose  connection at the brake caliper

Any Ideas ?

Thank you for your help

Greetings Juergen

Some cars use two per side.  Check out the link below.  My 73 just used one per side.  It has to do with the hose design.

The new washers are thinner than original and don't seal.  Reuse the original ones.

If those are gone, I think you can still get the correct ones from Chrysler.  They are expensive though.

The bolt that attaches the hose to the caliper is called a banjo bolt. Put 1 copper washer on the banjo bolt, insert in the hose fitting, then the other copper washer on the bolt then screw it into the caliper. Seals both sides of the bolt. Hope this helps.

If you have a local, garage you use ask them.  I usually have 20 different thicknesses of those floating around the shop cause a lot of new calipers have multipacks of them and you pick the thickness you want.  There in my junk bin, under my tool box, behind the compressor, floating in my parts washer etc.  any decent garage that hordes stuff will have a few.  I keep old crappy wheel weights too for the local rc airplane club that always needs to add weight to the tail or nose of a new rc airplane.  A good shop takes care of his neighbors. :bigshades:

...I don´t have Banjo bolts..

The brake hose is screwed in directly into the caliper..  Therefor I only udes one washer on each caliper...
but they do not seal 100%...so prehaps I will " reuse " the old washers....as you said..

 :iagree:

Each side should have 2 washers. One washer on each side of the brake line end and the bolt going thru both of them and attaching to the caliper.

It depends on the style of brake hose. My 73 doesn't use a bolt. The hose is threaded on the end. That style hose only uses one washer per side.

...the same HOSE I have !  The hose is threaded on the end ... like the ones from  "burdar"...  My calipers are the PIN Style ones....

Perhaps  I will lookk for a new et of washers...  to get them sealed
